Re: BEINN SGRITHEALL - a forced retreat!

We descended that path on Saturday and got absolutely mauled by ticks higher up. At one point we where constantly brushing 10-15 off at a time. It was a constant stream of them.

Re: Advice Please: Men's Hooded Insulated Jacket

Gaynors are selling Helly Hansen Ice crew baselayers for £40 just now. I've got several of the Lifa tops and they are fantastic. I've not used the ice crew yet but I'd imagine sticking merino over the top of lifa is sure to be a winter winner.

Re: jackets

I'd agree with this. I use both a Marmot ROM with Gore Windstopper and a Rab Vapor Rise jacket. Both keep a ridiculous amount of rain out considering that's not the primary design of them. The Marmot one is just the best piece of kit I have for the hills. It blocks out 99.9% of wind, withstands a fa...

Re: GPS or Smartphone?

Having your phone signal on or off won't affect your actual GPS. Phones use the same GPS system as dedicated GPS units such as Garmin. The problem with phones is they'll generally use a less expensive GPS chip than a dedicated unit and also the phones casing can affect the signal accuracy. A lot of ...

Re: Which sub £130 shell? Lightweight/Breathable/Waterproof

I've got a Rab Xiom jacket and for the money it's an excellent jacket for both waterproof and breathability. The only problem with it is the DWR wears of pretty quickly and the bottom of the sleeves wet out just around the cuff. It's a 3 layer too so none of that sticky stuff you get with 2 and 2.5 ...

Re: Boots. Arrrggghhhh!!! How hard can it be!!??

I'd recommend these. I've had them for a while now and they're a fantastic boot. Extremely grippy sole too. Gave me grateful confidence on Liathach and messing about on the Nanairn boulders. First thing I did with them was stand up to the ankle in a river. Not a drop of water got in. Comfortable eno...
