Do let us know how the levels are when you do it, Ben Aden is on my target list this spring/summer, so hoping we get finally get a dry spell soon.

Re: Clothing advice for a newbie?

Generally, you can go cheap on most items - baselayers, tops, socks, underwear, midlayer fleeces are all much of a muchness (obviously avoiding cotton). The things you should not cheap out on are boots/shoes and waterproofs. I've learned this the hard way with both items - started with a cheap pair ...

Garbh Bheinn (Kinlochleven) Parking

Just wondering if anyone has an idea of how the parking/layby looks for the usual WH route up Garbh Bheinn on the road down into Kinlochleven. Last year it was closed off due to the landslide, and when I drove past later in the year, those laybys were still not accessible.

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

I'm not totally against parking charges if it's reasonable for the amount of time one might spend parked whilst out on an adventure, unlike, for example, the car parking at Arrochar (commonly used for walks up Beinn Ime, Narnain and The Cobbler as well as the Glen Loin loop. Last time I was down the...

Re: Smar twatch with OS mapping?

Honestly, I'd just get a Fenix - obviously the latest and greatest may be expensive, but I use both a Fenix 5 Plus and a Fenix 6 Pro and both are absolutely fine for most activities, including full colour mapping. A certain oversized online shopping site has the Fenix 5 Plus available for around £30...

Haha, eatery bagging, now that I could definitely get behind! (although possibly more hazardous to one's health than being on the mountains)

Re: Garmin Fenix 6 gpx track views

If you open the GPX files in a text editor (e.g. on a Windows machine, just use Notepad), you can see that the GPX routes from Walkhighlands are actually routes - e.g. the top part contains: </metadata> <rte> <name>Sgòrr nan Lochan Uaine and Sgùrr Dubh</name> <rtept lat="57.5553211431658" ...

Re: Strathfarrar

Cycling up the glen to the foot of the Munros is another possibility - no restrictions on bike access. This is what I did as I was a bit wary of the whole entry/exit shennanigans. It was a fairly big (9.5hr) day by my standards, but it's a fairly relaxed ride in/out (slightly more uphills on the wa...

Re: Cycling in the hills

What attracts you to a gravel bike? A decent light MTB is far nicer to ride, especially on rougher tracks, and maybe a tiny bit slower. I think a lot of it depends on the type of terrain one would want to cover, I only have space to store a single bike, and while I realise (and has been pointed out...

Re: Cycling in the hills

And sorry, not wanting to derail from the OP's question but curious if anyone does these kind of rides on gravel bikes as opposed to MTBs? I'm looking at doing more cycling next year, and would prefer a gravel bike for longer distance rides on road, tracks and some light trail - I've been using a ha...

Re: Deaths on anoach eagach ridge

So sad, some reports saying it was a guide & two clients It was indeed. An absolutely tragic accident. I can only assume they were roped together and someone slipped. Condolences to their families. From what I heard, it was on the first 20m drop after Am Bodach even before the main ridge (what ...

Re: Beinn Bhuidhe Knoydart

Can't answer your question regarding the vehicle track as it looked like it was still being developed when I was there last year (May 2022). However I did do that corbett using the WH route and I don't recall it being a particularly big hill day (unlike the two neighbouring munros the previous day) ...

Re: Who to trust?

I usually check the met and yr.no using munros as targets (and If I'm looking at other hills, I'll use the closest munro) - if they both agree on a forecast, I usually have a good degree of confidence in it. If they do not agree, I have a plan b ready.

Re: Overnight parking in Ullapool

Hello, I'm just wondering where you ended up parking in the end? I also have a trip planned to Stornoway through the week for a few nights. Thanks in advance! Hi - I ended up changing my plans and during a recent stay in Skye, I took my car over on the uig-tarbert ferry and did Clisham (direct rout...
