Re: An incredible day on Beinn Achaladair and Beinn a'Chreac

Very jealous of your weather and interesting to read your walk report which contrasts my experiences 4 days later on the 29th quite a bit. I walked in along the access road and there was only big cows on the road before you get to the houses and climbers car park. We went through the gate into the f...

Re: Canoe across Loch Quoich

This is exactly how I was planning to tackle Sgurr Mor in a few years time. I had ideas of paddling to the corbetts and munros around Loch Quioch and also across Loch Hourn to Barrisdale Bay but I know nothing about any of the stuff and I'm not sure I have the desire to learn about it since I don't ...

Re: Northern Cairngorms: Mheander to Mheadhoin

I did a similar route to this a few months ago and I am wondering why I didn't take the same route from Fiacaill Ridge to Mheadhoin as yourself. I descended east of Hell's Lum Crag down to the Shelter stone and back up the other side, I really begrudged having to head in and out of that corrie twice...

Re: Stob Ghabhar's Aonach Eagach and guidebooks

Skawt if you're looking for other grade 1s in the area I hear there is a good ridge on the North Face of Cruachan, I've been meaning to do it and Stob Diamh for a while now... I'm surprised you have only done Ben Cruachan out of the three in that area! What with it being so close to Oban. Seems lik...

Re: Stob Ghabhar's Aonach Eagach and guidebooks

May be of some use. This is of some use, thanks! Steve Fallon says grade 1 somewhere on that ridge (it can't possibly be the section west of "couloir buttress"), your guide book says grade 2 and others say grade 3. Dubious, I think I'll leave it for a while yet and focus on other hills an...

Re: Stob Ghabhar's Aonach Eagach and guidebooks

This is where I found Steve Fallon saying the AE on Stob Ghabhar was a grade 1 scramble, on the list further down the page- http://www.stevenfallon.co.uk/scrambles-definition.html As you can see that doesn't give any routes. From what I could see from where I was I wouldn't be surprised if it is a g...

Re: Stob Ghabhar's Aonach Eagach and guidebooks

Hi Emily, thank you for your reply but I'm not sure if I worded my original post correctly. I did the walkhighlands route yesterday, the blue line, but I was enquiring about the direct route up the aonach eagach on the 1:25k map, the red dotted line I drew on roughly, for future reference. I had a l...

Stob Ghabhar's Aonach Eagach and guidebooks

I was out doing the walkhighlands suggested route of Stob a'Choire Odhair and Stob Ghabhar yesterday knowing that Steve Fallon suggests the Aonach Eagach ridge is a grade 1 scramble. I had no intentions of doing it yesterday but I wanted a good look for future reference. I couldn't find anything onl...

Re: Walking Companions Needed from the Central Belt!

Hello Gemma, I know that feeling well. It can be very difficult to find walking buddies if you decide to take up walking at our age (I'm 25, took up walking in 2014) without being part of a university club, I didn't know a single person when i started. I went through some of the meetup groups and en...

Re: Down jackets

I would never buy a down jacket for the UK for anything other than wearing to the Clachaig, other pubs are available. The weather here is just too unpredictable to have to worry about not being allowed to get a piece of clothing wet for fear of killing it. I have a Black Diamond Heat Treat synthetic...

Re: Dogs and livestock

That's terrible! I have had the same thoughts as HDShark, warnings upon entry to areas with risk of sheep would help a great deal. My usual rule of thumb is keep my dog on the lead on the ascent and if I see no sheep I'll let her off for the descent if it's an out and back route. She is good in the ...

Re: Walking/Camping on the WHW alone as a woman

It's a real shame that these worries even have to enter people's minds but it's understandable why. You will be walking a well populated route and no doubt staying at highly populated campsites. You will encounter many chatty people and the chances are that 100% of these people will be harmless and ...

Re: Bidean nam Bian: Stob Coire na Lochan east ridge

Fantastic, thanks guys! I'll head up that way next time. There's a few pics of the ridge on the reports: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=60000 It would also seem I have told a lie. I had used your gearr aonach zigzag report to find the start of the route and it was a hug...

Bidean nam Bian: Stob Coire na Lochan east ridge

Hello, I was up at Bidean yesterday doing the Gearr Aonach zig zags and continuing on to the two munros. In my research i had seen one single report of the east ridge of Stob Coire nan Lochan being ascended as a shortcut but the report was in winter conditions and the guy had rope with him so I deci...
