GIS mapping software

Hi all, Has anyone has experience of using GIS mapping software? I have some links to WMS (web mapping service) files showing footpaths, and apparently I need GIS software to use them. I see there's quite a few free GIS options (QGIS looks good) but to be honest haven't tried any yet, so wondered if...

Re: Tick / cleg repellant

Ask 100 walkers for keeping midges away and you'll get 100 different answers.
So like a lot of things I think it's trial and error and what works best for you.

The only thing that's worked for me is a net.

Re: Cairn at bottom of Ben More

Could be - but the crash was higher up wasn't it? And there is a memorial to them in the church yard.

Cairn at bottom of Ben More

Hi all, Does anyone know what this cairn is for at the bottom of Ben More, not too far up from the farm and main road? It seems to have been walled off at one point, but I couldn't see any plaque on it. Just wondering! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48968228078_0aa44345c4_c.jpg

Good grief - his second post on the forum and he's saying the site should be taken down!

Thank goodness for everyone else's common sense here.

Re: Ideas for 4 days hiking/wildcamping in the Cairngorms

How about this?

Mountain camping, lochside camping, woodland camping. One my favourite trips in the Highlands I think!

Re: Suggestions for a 5 day hike!- first time in Scotland

Loch Lomond is very popular - but lovely. Are you travelling from Glasgow? If you don't mind heading a bit further north on the train to Fort William - a lovely journey in itself! - I really enjoyed walking from Invergarry to Inverie to visit the UK's most remote mainland pub. Some lovely camping an...

Re: deer flies - keds

As I wrote of Meall Bhuide a wee while back: "As mentioned the keds had been constant all the way up and although tedious and irritating they weren’t a real problem and I’d almost got used to them. But on the top here there was nothing less than a swarm of them. Suddenly I had dozens and dozens...

Re: Can I 'claim it' dilemma?!

If you say you bagged the Cobbler, someone might ask if you threaded the needle tell you it doesn't count if you haven't. Same with the In Pinn, you could be asked if you stood on top of the Bolster Stone. But nobody is going to ask about Ben Ime. I wouldn't sweat it, do a more interesting route in...

Re: Can I 'claim it' dilemma?!

I know I haven't been to the true summit of Plover Hill in the Dales, although we're possibly talking inches rather than feet or metres - I looked over the wall it's on the other side of, couldn't see anything higher (although I couldn't see anything, really), and turned back. I've claimed it for n...

Re: Can I 'claim it' dilemma?!

I think I'll claim it for now, but with the 'backstop' that I promise to go back and do it properly next time. Thinking about I could easily be passing through heading further north. Up to you, of course, but that's not really a logically consistent position!! Think of it as an opportunity to explo...

Re: Can I 'claim it' dilemma?!

Maybe time to invest in a GPS, or download a Grid reference app to a smart phone if you have one. Better to have retreated than ended up a mortality statistic though. None of the Munro summits are in military zones, and none are on private premises. These are the two factors which cause the most an...

Re: Can I 'claim it' dilemma?!

Hehe - it's all up to you Did Cruach Ardrain and Beinn Tulaichean and wasnt sure of Beinn Tulaichean' summit, although I kept telling myself it must have been the summit. It kept gnawing and gnawing until I went back and did them again. Same summit same mist same no views!! I think you're right! I ...

Not familiar with ViewRanger, but are you saying it doesn't accept standard .gpx files?
