Re: Campervans

I agree the lack of facilities in some(perhaps) many areas is a problem when the number visiting those areas has increased dramatically in the last couple of year. An integrated infrastructure in needed. A particularly loopy decision of Highland Council was to close(or no longer maintain) some publi...

Re: Pronunciation of town and village names

From travelling quite a few times on ferries to and from Mallaig the pronunciation definitely has the stress on the first syllable but omits any suggestion of a letter, 'a', and is MAL-ig Dave Gaelic has broad and slender vowels. A,o,u are broad and I and e are slender. Gaelic spelling conventions ...

Re: Campervans

Campervan websites repeatedly use the term 'wild camping'.....I suppose if they use a term long enough (even if its totally wrong usage) then it becomes acceptable? Good point. It really annoys me when I see people who are travelling by motor go on about, (a) where they can 'wild camp', or (b) how ...

Re: Mini simple gps

Agree with Matt_outandabout.

I have used OS Locate only a few times and only to test it(ie I knew where I was and wanted to know if OS Locate did also), and it worked well.

Re: Wild Goats on Slioch

Great story, Caberf. Alternatively, perhaps the English soldiers did not approach the cave because of the smell of the goats. Your account of people feeding them reminded me of a visit we made to a goat farm at Elphin, many years ago. The male was another field because they owners were trying, by re...

Re: Wild Goats on Slioch

Good shots. I have a great fondness for goats and the ones on Slioch(and around Dundonnell) are always great to see. The first time I did Slioch was many years ago and the goats seemed to be doing well then, with a herd of about 20 of all ages. The older males are magnificent, aloof and, by a countr...

Re: Golden Eagle

I think golden is more likely but wouldn't rule out it being a white tailed eagle. The tail could be white because it is a WTE but also it could be a young golden eagle showing white on the tail. The tail shape does look more like a golden eagle, but difficult to tell from the angle. While WTEs are ...

A morning visitor

At this time of the year seeing a pine marten in daylight is not that uncommon but doesn't occur that frequently. This female popped in for a quick feed on some peanuts.

Re: Level crossings, again

If “very well established and widely held accepted safety reasons” is the reason then surely all rail crossing should be closed. I'd like to know when a proposal is made to close a crossing how many accident have happened at that crossing in, say, the last 10 years. I think it is, as already said he...

Re: Adder/Pine Martin

Lovely to see any photo of a pine marten but that adder shot is great, what a sighting.

Re: Camping at Creag Meagiadh Visitor Centre

Just had a look here - https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/markerMobile.php?id=31209 - which gives info, but as this isn't the officail website it would probably be better for your friend to give the reserve a call.

Re: Water Containers?

I can't recommend any particular one but when we camped we used cube shaped ones that could sit with the tap uppermost, Ours were recycled beer containers but were like these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Collapsible-Water-Container-Spigot-2-5Gal%EF%BC%89/dp/B0797X6638/ref=sr_1_15?keywords=Large%2BSqua...
