Re: Mountain Rescue insurance necessary?

Spend the money on gear or training to make the likelihood of a call-out less necessary, if you like.

Re: River Allan Walk Greenloaning/Kinbuck - Scary cow experi

My gut instinct here is that they thought they were going to get fed - not sure if it's the case but it'd definitely a possibility. They'd likely get some kind of fodder over winter, so anyone turning up in the field = dinner time.

Re: 4 day (circular) hiking to Fort William not WHW?

I can't carry a pack these days, which means staying in actual campsites (that my stuff can be sent to) I think that's going to be quite restrictive. The only established luggage services I know of are on the main trails, which in that area are the WHW / GGW - for anything else you're going to need...

Re: The silliest sign you've seen on a walk?

Every time I see a 'Coffin Road" sign it always makes me think of a bunch of suited and booted pallbearers standing out there with a coffin, a map and a compass going "Ah, right, it's this way, lads." Problem is, I can't remember where I've seen such a sign. They do exist and I though...

Re: No rail access to Corrour/Rannoch in mid-March

I'm tempted to turn up with a tent and a big bag of food on the last train and have the place to myself for a week. Then I remember that I could more or less have the place to myself anytime, and that a train escape route might actually be very useful. Hostel is showing fully booked or unavailable f...

Re: Wild Camping with a short walk in from Public Transport

Max of 3 nights/4 days, max of 5 miles a day, is 20 miles max for the whole trip. A straight line between Corrour and Dalwhinnie stations is 20 miles, so the actual walking has got to be a bit more, plus there's several hundred meters of up and down. I think we might be pushing the envelope a little...

Re: Crossing the Geldie Burn.

Have done those crossings (it's really three in a short space of time, rather than one, as I recall) several times. The only time I got my feet wet was when I was in a foul mood due to already having got wet feet earlier in the day. "I'll just walk through it," I thought, "my feet are...

Re: Word of Warning

I have my whistle on the zip of my jacket's inner chest pocket - actually makes getting the pocket open with gloves on easier.

Walkers may also find one on their headtorches - the 'buckle' bit of my Petzl's strap doubles up as a slightly weak whistle.

Re: Cooking Systems

Heh. No, I got the actual Trangia one, despite the extra cost - I figure when it involves flammables it's worth it.

Re: Cooking Systems

Just got the Trangia gas burner delivered - only tried it out in the kitchen, but the heat generated, plus the ability to control the flame, make it a lot easier to use than the meths burner.

Re: Waterproof socks - are any worth it?

I'm a big fan of my Sealskinz, but they've only had a few outings so can't speak to longevity. Definitely kept my feet dry when the boot was sloshing though. You do end up with sweat-clammy feet, but that's a far less unpleasant problem, and airing them out at rest stops helps a lot.

Re: Thermometers?

I've got one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000YIYDZ6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Nothing special, but the probe would mean you could monitor, say, in-tent and out-tent temperatures (or in and out of the sleeping bag). You need to manually switch between the in...

Re: Bivy + Tarp on the WHW

I love my bivvy/tarp combo but it's really only for ideal conditions - little if any rain, no midges and (thanks for the image, Giant Stoneeater) definitely no eyelid-ticks. Otherwise, tent. You can replicate most of the bivvy/tarp feel anyway - move the sleeping mat and bag outside, or remove/pin b...

Re: Rucksack size for day hikes

I just take my 32l Osprey, which I also use for summer overnighters. It's more space than needed but the weight difference with a smaller pack is minimal and it's comfy.

Re: Is there a good all round boot?

I've been hugely impressed by Sealskinz waterproof socks and am going to be experimenting with using those and not caring about waterproofness of footwear - I suspect quick draining/drying trainers and the socks might be a sweet spot. You definitely end up with damp feet at the end of a long day sti...
