Re: Ben Aden / Loch Quoich Levels

The Abhainon Chosaidh crossing isn’t as bad as made out, but is serious in spate. I’ve crossed the morning after all night steady rain, when it was powerful and upper thigh deep but doable. Better if you lack imagination, in those conditions as a slip would not end well. Coming back next day early a...

Re: Your favourite golden eagle encounters

Sadly no longer reside there. It might have been eyeing up the neighbours chickens, or geese. It was the only time I saw an Eagle in the Township. I used to regularly get an Otter poohing on the front door step, there was a stream with trout forming one boundary and the front door faced North and Ea...

Re: Your favourite golden eagle encounters

If you will excuse one Golden and one White tailed tale; Golden; on opening the bedroom curtains one morning I found my self staring at a Golden Eagle directly in the eyes, it was in the garden tree 20ft away at the same height as the window. It was a very primeval feeling standing there stark bollo...

Re: Ladhar Bhienn from Inverie

No difficulties from a scrambling point of view. So the choice of direction comes down, as ever, as to which will be the greater irritation on the day; walking into the wind, and/or walking with the sun in your eyes.

Re: Oban Bothy

There are no bad ways, of the ways I’ve approached all gave their own charm. - Strathan via Pean is probably the most popular and is very atmospheric. - Doing the Corryhully munros gives expansive and changing panoramas from looking down loch Sheil, to then North towards The Rough Bounds and finally...

Re: Oban Bothy in April?

How easy was it to cross the river?……. https://www.scotsman.com/news/morag-of-loch-morar-mermaid-monster-or-myth-1588841 ‘The writings paint a conflicting view of Morag. One account depicts her as a mermaid-like creature with flowing hair, while another paints her as a grim reaper whose sighting was...

Re: Oban Bothy in April?

Oban Bothy is always closed for the Stalk, and while the aim is normally to reopen after the end of the hinds in mid Feb, commonly there is a delay. In fact I’ve never known it to be opened as scheduled. Sadly my memory fails me of previous dates……maybe you could get a general feel from past MBA new...

Re: You support masts in wild land (allegedly)

For anyone in a similar predicament at the head of Loch Nevis today. Simultaneous options, if party size allows, would a runner up the arm of Ciche which should get you mobile signal from the mast at Malliag in about 30minutes hard effort (keep going up till you get signal) and a runner to Camusrory...

Re: Fort William to Montrose

Just in case you are unaware, if your list represents stopping points to avoid carrying camping kit, Culra Bothy is closed due to asbestos.

Re: Ungritted roads advice

Highland Gritting routes are available online; Sutherlands map is here; https://www.highland.gov.uk/downloads/file/720/sutherland_gritting_maps It’s not that primary routes aren’t gritted, it’s that if the weather forecast is for snow, traffic is light off trunk roads, as most folks will stay home, ...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

Tourists while contributing to the local economies ( i.e. contributing to local business owners profits) they do not make any contribution to the upkeep of publicly owned infrastructure that they enjoy and on which they also cause additional wear and tear. That is patently false and myopic, tourist...

Re: Oh Dear...

If the snow is soft to the point if you fall over you won’t slide anywhere there is no problem with using poles, rather than an axe. It could be argued in such conditions having your axe out of the way where you can’t impale yourself on it is the better coarse of action. It’s hard to tell from a pho...

Re: Oh Dear...

We don’t know enough, to judge their actions on the hill, nor should we ….’those that live in glasses houses’ and all that. Going down the discussion of whether a summer / winter ML makes you an expert, or indicates a base level of proficiency is also a moot point. But as has been alluded to, what o...

Re: Mullardoch boat

Like most outings the weather can make or break. I’ve walked the shore of shame (only joking) three times twice when day two was desperately wet, on one occasion we seriously struggled with the river crossings, and once when we’d gone hell for leather on a hot day along the south side and wiped ours...
