Re: School hillwalking club

As others have said, you'll need a Summer Mountain Leader award and current First Aid certificate to lead a party, although "assistants" may not. Unfortunately, you'll also be obliged to fill in vast reams of paperwork to justify the Risk Assessment process you went through. The Outdoor Ed...

Aonach Shasuin Carn a Choice Gairbh

Just a word to the wise: the main route up the Allt Garbh is now on the East bank. We did the route described anti-clockwise, heading more or less directly up to the summit of Aonach Shassuin from the track from Cougie, which is now enlarged to service a run of the river hydro scheme. Found: walking pole, Loch Arkaig parking

I found a walking pole at the parking place at the end of the public road along Loch Arkaig. Post make and model and pay postage and you can get it back!
Also mug and single zip-off trouser leg, same deal.
(We were parked for 3 nights, no-one came back for it)

It's perfectly easy to cross dryshod when the water is as low as today, and the path leading to ...

Re: Which size of rucksack for a newbie hill climber

The sizes you mention are fine for summer walking; you'll need one at the upper limit for winter.
Paradoxically, the better (ie lighter/ more compact/ expensive) your kit and spare clothing are, the smaller your rucksack can be.

Scarpa ZG Gtx Trek boots

I bought a pair of these from Tiso at Townhead, Glasgow . They were used for two days in bone dry conditions abroad. On their third day's use they were sopping wet through after simply strolling through wet grass on the way up The Cobbler. Kudos to Tiso's for the complete refund. But beware: my pair...
