Re: LIATHACH - a tantalising daunder in Glen Torridon.

Wow!
Great report. Great photos.
That's my appetite well and truly whetted.

Re: Clach Glas-Bla Bheinn traverse

Hi Cameron,
Yep, we're softies - we dodged the worst of the showers, courtesy of a leisurely start-time.......we parked at the head of Loch Slapin at about 1pm and were back in The Blue Shed Cafe at Torrin for coffee and cake (highly recommended) by 4.30pm.

Re: Clach Glas-Bla Bheinn traverse

Excellent report, Cameron - very well done.......and welcome to Skye Did a shortened version (omitted Sgurr nan Each, started at the bealach at the head of Choire a' Caise and finished with the 18m chimney on to Bla Bheinn) back in August - and I was occasionally on the sensible end of a short rope ...

Re: An atmospheric day onTower Ridge

Brought the memories (nightmares?) flooding back. Did this about 40 years ago on a university climbing club Spring outing, in the days before reliable mountain weather forecasts. Started snowing heavily during the final 'scramble'. Running behind schedule, 3 of us spent a chilly, fairly sleepless ni...

Re: Third time lucky - Bruach na Frithe

Great report, JKLL! It was sitting on the summit of BnF, looking along the whole length of the ridge to the south, on a clear, sunny June day in 2007 that sowed the seed for me moving up here. I relocated to Skye February 2012 and have picked off a few more Cuillin Munros, including the Inaccessible...

Re: Sgurr Dearg & the In Pin

Many thanks, one and all, for your very kind comments - and apologies if my pics were 'menacing'. I stick to what I say - its bark is much worse than its bite. It's all in the mind and the mythology. Up to the point I set off down the slabs to the start of the Moderate -graded climb, I was not a hap...

Sgurr Dearg & the In Pin

Despite my advancing years, I think I'm still a half-decent rock-climber on rags and outcrops (seconding up to Hard Severe grade, leading V Diff) - but I'd still nearly talked myself out of this escapade before I'd even set off. The descriptions of the 'yawning chasm' on the right and the narrowness...

Re: Blabheinn via the south ridge

Excellent report of a great walk. It'll be no consolation but it was also brutally hot over on Am Basteir last Sunday - nearest I've ever been to dehydration on Skye. Scorchio! I ascended the south ridge for the first time in early April this year, with a couple of friends, on a cold blustery day wi...

Re: Unfit and Roasted in The Mamores

Yup - Sunday was a real scorcher. I took an extra litre (2 instead of my usual one) up Am Basteir and was still close to dehydration by the time we got back to Sligachan. Barely a breath of wind all day, even up top. Mind you, I took every opportunity to stick my head in a stream on the way up. And ...

Am Basteir - too darn'd hot

Hottest day of the year so far forecast, cloudless and little breeze. Extra weight of an additional litre of water and helmet and harness - all of which came in useful. Even a lazy 10am start, by which time it was already very warm, from Sligachan could not detract from what is, I think, a rather pl...

Re: Frithe, Basteir and Sgurr nan Gillean

Excellent detailed report, Ranger. Checked the date and I think our paths briefly crossed at the summit of Bruach na Frithe as the clouds fully cleared - your photo of me on the summit is now my profile pic on FB....many thanks. I was checking the walk reports just now because I'll be climbing Am Bh...

Re: Ben Challum (more or less!!)

Each to their own but, personally, I struggle to see the point of climbing a hill and "bagging" its summit just so I could tick a box on a list (....that should encourage debate!). I do most of my mountain-walking on my own on Skye, especially in and around the Cuillin(s), where my rule of...

Beinn na Caillich & the Broadford Red Hills

After several years of commuting to Skye from Kent 3 or 4 times a year, retirement recently gave me the chance to move to Skye permanently to carry on my enjoyment of its hills, mountains, coastal cliffs and secret bays. Somehow, although I always stayed in Torrin and now live in Broadford, I'd not ...

Re: A route less travelled for Bruach na Frithe

Just in case anyone thought about using this route description for the north ridge of Sgurr a Bhasteir, let me correct the error I have just spotted in my own report. I mention "heading for the low col just N of Meall Odhar". Of course, it should say "heading for the low col just SOUT...

A route less travelled for Bruach na Frithe

Here's an alternative start to the walk - with an additional ridge and minor summit thrown in. Followed this route on 14 May 2009 - a cool, cloudless and breezy day......perfect for walking. From the Sligachan Hotel, start off on the path that starts opposite the mountain rescue post, heading for th...
