Mountain Rescue – on-scene evaluation

When MR arrives at an incident where the casualty is unresponsive or otherwise uncommunicative, what steps are taken to identify the victim and any possible underlying medical issues they may have? And do non-MR health professionals (e.g. paramedics) do anything similar in more accessible (urban) en...

Re: Which summits are the Five Sisters?

Mal and Simon, thanks very much - I knew it was about the view but hadn't heard that it was from the Ratagan pass which would justify excluding Spainteach in the list. Weedavie - I've seen plenty of walk reports and videos titled "Five Sisters" that go nowhere near Sgurr na Moraich. Each t...

Which summits are the Five Sisters?

I'm struggling to find a definitive answer to this, but which 5 summits make up the Five Sisters of Kintail? The best I can find is: Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe Sgurr na Carnach Sgurr Fhuaran Sgurr nan Saighead Sgurr na Moraich But I've heard some people say that Sgurr nan Spainteach is the first of the s...

Medical IDs - does anybody use them?

I've been considering buying a medical id bracelet (or similar) for when I head into the hills following a recent incident where a friend had to be airlifted off the hill. Does anybody here wear one and if so what brand/company do you use? I've been looking at OneLifeID with its associated online in...

Re: Knight's Peak - demotion ?

[A truly bonkers term is "Irish Hewitts" - The "Hew" stands for "Hills of England and Wales" so "Irish Hewitts" are "Irish Hills of England and Wales."] The "Hewi" stands for "Hills of England, Wales and Ireland" so suddenly &quo...

Knight's Peak - demotion ?

TGO and Chris Townsend have tweeted this afternoon that Knight's Peak has been demoted from its "Top" status. I can't see anything on the Munro Society website - the society sponsored the survey - and there's nothing on the OS website after the processing of the data was sent to them due t...

Re: Scarpa cristallo gtx boots yes / no

I bought a pair of these recently specifically for rockier routes but haven't used them in anger yet - although they do get a lot of positive reviews. But, and it's a big but, don't pay £220 for them. I paid under £130 at GoOutdoors. I know a lot of people don't like that chain of shops but it pays ...

Re: Beinn a'Chlaidheimh demoted

I have no axe to grind with the classification of hills but do think a Munro should be higher than 3000 feet. Spot on. The smc can do what it likes but when i did this one + the last one which was demoted i did them when they were munro's so i classify myself as having done 284 and not 283 or 282 o...

Re: Beinn a'Chlaidheimh demoted

About time too!

I wonder what they had to do for them to agree with the foremost surveyors in the land (Ordnance Survey) that 913.96 is less than 914.40.

It looks like simple maths to me.

ciderpeter's 215 Wainwright's

I was just reading ciderpeter's http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18487 Fairfield walk report and noticed in his summary that he's ticked 215 Wainwrights.

Can anyone tell me how this is possible ?

Cheers, Al.

Re: Great Mell Fell

That's really whetted my appetite for tomorrow for my first day out this year which will be on the Riggindale Horseshoe.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Re: Best GPS system for hiking

also just curious how many satmap users actually carry a map and compass, or do they put all their trust in modern technology  not trying to start a fight just curious :) I usually carry a 1:25000 OS map with a compass, a 1:50000 OS or 1:40000 BMC spare plus an A5 laminate for the "bigg...

Re: Best GPS system for hiking

The SATMAP ACTIVE 10 PLUS is a superb piece of kit - I swear by mine and it's just come out top of the pile in the latest TRAIL magazine GPS review. You need an appropriate SD card but I think you can pick up the unit plus OS GB 1:50,000 card as a bundle for about £300 if you look around. Cheers, Al.

Re: Dodd & Latrigg

I'm certainly jealous of the "magnificent views". I did Dodd years ago when the summit was surrounded by trees.

I wonder whether I should do it again before I finish the Wainwrights - seems a shame to miss out on the views !
