Re: West Highland Way- Wild Camping

It's easy to just backpack it carrying your own stuff and stopping where you like. I got round the Loch lomond ban by just doing that whole stretch in one day and camping in a little clearing to the left not far after the gate that marks the end of the restrictions. There are two campsites though if...

Re: French horseriders in the Highlands

Another source of information would be serc (Scottish endurance riding club) they've got branches in all regions including a Highlands branch. They will have members all over with local knowledge of the tracks that are equine friendly. A lot of there members do long distance routes across the Highla...

Re: Ben Cruachan stile getting worse?

There's a sheep gate to the right of the style ( looks like a wooden giant cat flap) that's big enough for a human  Done Cruachan a few times but only braved the style once

Re: Is hiking while pregnant safe?

I was still happily hiking at eight months pregnant. Just a lot slower  Drink plenty, nibble snacks often, take your time and above all listen to your body and your doctor. I was up and walking the dogs with baba in a sling 48 hours after a c section and I think it was a lot to do with staying ...

Re: Liquid Alc Stove Provisions

Decathlon out at the hermiston gait is open till 8.00 it's only 10/15 mins from the airport, so you could grab some on the way into Edinburgh. Obviously depends what time your planes coming in though and if your getting into town by taxi or bus.

I got my winter kit second hand, just look for decent makes ie not the Chinese knock offs. Grivel, camp, black Diamond, DDM, petzl, anything along those lines is good. Re: WHW Map

Take a map. I found three groups of people lost at the very beginning in Mugdock park. Not one person had a map  Good for figuring distances to shops/pubs/ where to stop for the night etc.

Re: The West Highland way, stage 8.

I think 7 hours is about right. When I did it last year, I broke camp in Kinlochleven at 9 and was on the train for the back of three going via a pub for a drink and meal, so can't be far of 7. Keep plenty oomph for the long drag though the forestry Road then main road back through town, it's painfu...

Re: Piles of Stones

As soon as I leave the gate to my property I am on someone else's land that may be publicly or privately owned. That's one of the most sad statements I have seen on this website and the sort of thinking that doesn't belong in Scotland and certainly not in the highlands . :( I couldn't agree with th...

Re: Walking/Camping on the WHW alone as a woman

I'm a 36 year old lassie an I did it alone last year on may. But I wild camped, so not at campsites. I felt totally safe the whole way and got some beautifully camping spots. Met plenty of folk on the way but I tend to walk quick so it was more have a conversation then head off solo again. Pretty su...

Re: Piles of Stones

How big is that? If it collapses on a little kid it could get nasty.[/quote]

Re: Just saying hello

Hello! :D I'm afraid to get Hill fit, you really need to get walking up hills. Easiest way is to go to the menu at the top of this page and look at the hills nearest you. If you've got an hour or two free try a sub 2000 then just move up to bigger stuff as you fitness grows. This is great for honing...

Re: Piles of Stones

My names jac and I have a stone pile habit :( It's not often and it's exclusively on beaches , but yes I confess I make some. It gives me an odd sense of satisfaction, much in the same way getting to the top a hill does. There's no real logic to either past time except enjoyment. I do it safe in the...

That's what I use and there great, also seem to hold most of there value on eBay should you decide to part with them. No clue what there proper price is as I'm a cheap skate a...
