Horse Ridge, Oregon

Driving east from Bend, we followed what appeared to be a road then onto a dirt track. Using Gaia, I could see there were blocks of land that weren't BLM/public. We stopped short when the road became too rough, but were soon asked what we were up to, ha! The private land owner didn't want us parking...

Lava Cast Forest and Butte, Oregon

A couple of walks south of Bend, Oregon. Lovely sunshine but a cool breeze. :D Lava Cast Forest trail (1.62km, 42m, 52m) Short paved trail with a few snow patches. We stopped to read all the signs on this interpretive trail - fascinating place! PXL_20240419_181258750.jpg PXL_20240419_182627167.jpg P...

East Green Mountain, Oregon

A short evening walk from our campsite. Made a wee loop after we followed the dirt road up only to realise it was the wrong top.

Warner Peak, Oregon

Having stayed at Hart Mountain Hot Springs camp, we set off to drive up the hill for a short walk. Didn't get far though! The road only opens for a few months later in the year. So we walked from the gate, adding 5.75km and 300m ascent to the walk in. On the way back we stayed high for a while to sh...

Toothpick Trail, Ashland, Oregon

A 'plan B' walk while waiting for minor car repairs. This has a couple of outlook spots, but mostly we were in the forest enjoying the different trees :D

At the other end of the trail there were plenty more choices - we walked towards the old mine for just a few minutes before turning back

Short hikes in Lava Beds National Monument, California

Day 2 in the monument for us, this was just a half day of sightseeing and following short trails. We recorded stats for a couple of the longer ones: Gillems Camp (0.62km, 26mins, 12m) and Captain Jack's Stronghold (1.29km, 45mins, 33m) What a fascinating park! Interesting landscape with a sad histor...

Schonchin Butte & Lava Caves, California

Our first full day in the Lava Beds National Monument. We climbed Schonchin Butte before the visitor center opened - a short, steep hike with nice views from the fire tower on top (2.54km, 44mins, 255m). Green Springs, Ashland, Oregon

A late afternoon walk with my sister, past the butterfly reserve. Followed an old trail, which heads out to Tom Springs Mountain (might leave earlier and go up there next time).

Green Springs Mountain, Oregon

Back visiting family, this is a local walk. We walked past last summer when going for a short section of the PCT. Grove of Titans, Redwoods, California

In Jedediah Smith State Park, we took the scenic drive along Howland Hill Road and stopped for this short trail. The leaflet said it was 1 mile/30mins, so we didn't take anything with us - only phones and camera, no water. Realised at the bottom that was one way to the start of the grove. Wha...

Tall Trees Trail, Redwoods, California

Got a free permit online to access this one. Fab big trees! This route starts high, goes down to a creek and loops around the tall trees, then it's a climb back up the same way. Manzanita Lake, Lassen Volcanic NP, California

Heading to Lassen Volcanic National Park, we had a weather warning of a winter storm  Decided to go for it anyway, thinking we'd just make a quick visit, and found this was one of the few trails that were open. We did it in spikes, helped by previous walkers who had used snow shoes to pack do...
