Grove of Titans, Redwoods, California

In Jedediah Smith State Park, we took the scenic drive along Howland Hill Road and stopped for this short trail. The leaflet said it was 1 mile/30mins, so we didn't take anything with us - only phones and camera, no water. Realised at the bottom that was one way to the start of the grove. Wha...

Tall Trees Trail, Redwoods, California

Got a free permit online to access this one. Fab big trees! This route starts high, goes down to a creek and loops around the tall trees, then it's a climb back up the same way. Trillium Falls and Klamath River, Redwoods, California

Trillium Falls is a loop trail, but we just went to the falls and back as this was our first time in the Redwoods National and State Parks - so much to see! (2.11km, 63m, 39min) PXL_20240324_202057741.jpg PXL_20240324_202349271.jpg PXL_20240324_203248225.jpg PXL_20240324_203611107.jpg PXL_2024...

Manzanita Lake, Lassen Volcanic NP, California

Heading to Lassen Volcanic National Park, we had a weather warning of a winter storm  Decided to go for it anyway, thinking we'd just make a quick visit, and found this was one of the few trails that were open. We did it in spikes, helped by previous walkers who had used snow shoes to pack do...

Petrified Forest, Calistoga, California

A short hike around the privately owned park (currently up for sale!). Good to see these ancient trees - imagine finding them in your garden! :o  PXL_20240321_173236481.jpg PXL_20240321_174540765.jpg PXL_20240321_175122353.jpg PXL_20240321_180349253.jpg PXL_20240321_182556560.jpg PXL_20240321_1...

High Peaks Trail & Balconies Cave, California

Day 2 in Pinnacles National Park, this time on the west side. This was 2 separate walks - the High Peaks Trail, looping through Tunnel View and coming back along the top of Bear Gulch (warn d as being steep and narrow). (7.99km, 500m, 3hr09) We were quicker at that than we'd expected, so ended up ca...

Bear Gulch - Mist Trail loop, California

In the east side of Pinnacles National Park, this was a fun route - made a little longer as the car park was full so we had to walk from Peak View picnic area. We weren't prepared for the cave having running water through it, so ended up wading through in bare feet. PXL_20240317_163718789.jpg ...

Yosemite Falls, CA

Big day! Set off thinking we'd get to Columbia Rock lookout, or the Lower Falls, and take stock from there. We ended up doing the full route though - to the upper falls and back again. Another great day for it though. 8) PXL_20240315_165601854.jpg PXL_20240315_173803520.jpg PXL_20240315_174925108.jp...

Wapama Falls, Hetch Hetchy, Yosemite

This was from the Hetch Hetchy entrance, visited by only 1% of Yosemite's visitors (probably just as well given the narrow road with sheer drops). Super windy today, but a lovely walk across the dam, past Tueeulala Falls and out to Wapama Falls. Added bonus today was seeing a bobcat! It walked right...

Mirror Lake and Vernal Fall, Yosemite

We walked up to the lake, only to find there was hardly any water in it! Carried on to do the bigger loop around the valley and found it looked fuller from the other side. Heading back through the carpark, we decided to take a detour to see Vernal Fall. This trail had a detour due to rockfall, so we...

North Grove, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, CA

Walking through the giants again. Lots of sequoias and various pine species. Fascinating place, interesting history (sad at times, with tales of destruction before people became more aware of their impact) and more fun in the snow with our spikes on. :D PXL_20240311_174042584.jpg PXL_20240311_174903...

Around Grant Grove, Kings Canyon National Park

After seeing the biggest tree in the world yesterday, we went to see the widest one today  General Grant didn't disappoint, and there were so many other huge sequoias all around it was great to explore the trails - even the North Boundary loop, where this hadn't been ploughed yet :D PXL_2024030...

Walking with big trees, Sequoia National Park

General Sherman Tree (0.8km), followed by the Big Tree Trail (2.4km). It's still winter up here, so we were glad to have our micro spikes :D What a fantastic place! 8) PXL_20240306_175550986.jpg PXL_20240306_180151360.jpg PXL_20240306_180309387.jpg PXL_20240306_182218440.jpg PXL_20240306_202137728.j...

Pyramid Canyon, Afton, California

One more walk before leaving the Mojave Wilderness Area. We found this on the All Trails app after someone stopped to check directions with us  Realising it's also an area for rockhounding, that's mainly what we went for. So this wasn't the full hike, and at a slower pace :D PXL_20240302_172709...

Spooky Canyon, Mojave, California

With only basic info on this route, we managed to find the start a few miles off Highway 15. We knew it would be cold and dark and had ropes to help with the climbs. So we set off each with just 1 extra layer, head torch and 1 bottle of water. The climb up was exhilarating (despite my shaky arms &am...
