Re: How to carry a heavier camera across your body

For my Nikon D5100 I hang it around my neck and use a bungee cord between my two shoulder straps holding it against my body, this makes for easy access to take snaps at a moments notice. Simple, but it works for me.

Re: Conditions on Ben Vorlich (loch earn)

I was on top last Tuesday on the main path and there is one very small snow patch off the track to the N side but nowhere near the path.

Re: OS Locate altitude discrepancy Apple/Samsung phones

I suspect that the iphone has a different GPs chip. Possibly the iphone also has a barometer which it uses as an altimeter, and/or used a data network to give additional positional information. Finally, the map datum might be different - the earth isn't a sphere, so you have to correct for that and...

OS Locate altitude discrepancy Apple/Samsung phones

My friends and I have noticed a big difference in the altitude reading we get when using OS Locate, we have 2 Samsung phones and 1 Apple. Both Samsungs give a similar reading that is out by approx. 50m and the Apple is always within 5m. OS website says the altitude is less accurate than location and...

Re: electric cars

I own two electric cars, a Nissan Leaf with 160 miles range and a BMW IX3 with 280 miles range and I have had no problem so far. If you are sensible and intelligent enough to use all the apps available and drive at a sensible speed, which is very few on the A9, then you will be OK. I would always av...

Re: SMC Corbetts and Other Hills book

Thanks for the replies however my opinion remains the same. When I found the discrepancy in my book I first went to the SMC website looking for a list of the 2016/7 changes but found nothing, I then e mailed SMC asking for this list and I'm still waiting for a response. When I was climbing the Munro...

Re: SMC Corbetts and Other Hills book

It might be a fine book but it's useless to anyone who is setting out to climb all the Corbetts as they would fail to climb the hills that are in the 'refreshed' edition. As far as I'm aware the height of the hills has not changed in many millennium so the only reason for a new edition is to increas...

SMC Corbetts and Other Hills book

I have just found out that the SMC Corbetts book I bought in Ballater in July 2018 is not accurate and out of date. The book was 'refreshed' in 2016/2017 so this book should not even have been on sale - buyer beware. I found a Corbett (Cnoc Coinnich) listed in the WH website that did not appear in t...

Re: Fitness trackers

I have a Garmin Instinct (not Solar) and it does everything I need or ever wanted, the Solar version was just selected by TGO magazine as the best GPS watch.

Re: Glen Moy

You should try the West side past Glencuilt and even over Craigthran for a circular walk. Glen Moy is lovely because it's never busy, the road took a battering this winter so it's in bad shape but OK. So handy from Kirriemuir.

Re: Garmin Instinct GPS watch

The online manual does not mention that you have to (or tell you how to do it) change the format to suit the region of the world you happen to be in. It makes total sense to do so and its what I was looking for but I had no idea how to do it and neither the manual nor Garmin Support told me how to d...

Re: Garmin Instinct GPS watch

Thanks very much to both Mal and Jolly Roger, these two changes are exactly what I was looking for.I knew the fix had to be simple but I could not find any mention of this in the Instinct manual.

Re: Cooking equipment

The September issue of The Great Outdoors has a review of camping cookware by the King of backpacking, Chris Townsend. I recommend it.

Garmin Instinct GPS watch

The GPS reading I get on my Garmin Instinct watch does not mirror the OS map locations, how do I sync the watch reading to the map reading.

Garmin Support have been less than helpful responding to me every 3-4 weeks, I've done all the asked and its still the same..

Re: Ben Hope

Yes, apart from Mr Angry in Orange this report sums up my trip on Sunday 11th, visibility of 20m for the top half of the mountain meant it wasnt a lot of fun :( I had just came from a week on Orkney and was looking forward to the view back to Hoy but I was lucky to be able to see my feet. I hope to ...
