Re: Recommendations for Liner Socks

For years l just wore two pairs of walking socks. Convert to liner socks due to better fitting boots now.

Re: Beinne Bhuidhe conditions

Not sure when you are intending to hit the hill. Was in Glen Lyon yesterday on Stuchd an Lochain. Very heavy snow for much of afternoon with deep drifting. Very soft and wet below the snow

Re: B1 vs B2 boots for winter mountain walking

They do make a difference when scrambling. The type of rubber gives you better grip on small holds. However, there is no doubt they will wear quickly. There was a previous thread discussing tread depth in modern boots and how quickly they wear away compared to in the past. The vibrant sole on the Me...

Re: B1 vs B2 boots for winter mountain walking

My understanding of having the climbing zone area is to enable scrambling on rock much more easily. Don’t tend to be a feature of winter boots, but have it on my Scarpa Mescalito GTX boots l use most of the rest of the year

Re: Schiehallion Advice Please

Not been up there recently but would be amazed if you get away without an ice axe and crampons on Tuesday. Although it has been warm and wet last few days, temperatures will drop tonight and even on Friday there l encountered snow on Queensberry Hill in the Borders. The Corbetts above Moffat had ple...

Re: Queensberry from Forest of Ae

Was up Queensbury yesterday and followed this route to the Met Station but then foolishly decided to stick to an OS Maps route l had downloaded which continued in the forestry to more directly below summit and appeared to follow a forest break. Big mistake as break was covered in fallen trees and de...

Re: Scarpa Mescalito TRK Pro GTX

I have a pair of trek GTCS l bought last year. Not the Pro version which looks like a slight upgrade, especially to a B1 rating. Good boot but agree it has been a three season boot for me. Bit narrow and felt it took a bit of walking in. Have used them once in snow conditions but earlier comments on...

Re: The Dangers of Forest Walks in High Wind

A week on from the storms l was up on Meall Mor in Glencoe this morning. I was just about back down at the end of the forestry track and about to nip down the path to Visitor Centre. There were a lot of damaged conifers, with one or two having fallen onto others and although there was only light win...

Re: Cairnsmore of Carsphairn.

Was up last July in the clay. All was quiet. Only problem l had was locating the path at the end of track, mostly due to cloud and previous activities as mentioned. New fence and stile in place and no issues

Re: Just how dry is it?

Reporting Scotland was reporting thunderstorms storm deluges around Drumnadrochit of a month’s rainfall yesterday. Interesting to see the extent this just runs off , especially given the number of landslides reported in the West. Typical though, school holidays still two weeks away so keeping an eye...

Re: Places to practice scrambling near the Central Belt?

Craig more Crags below Auchengillan Outdoor Centre has some short, straightforward routes and especially towards the northern end quite scrambly. Not long though

Re: Advice on Ben Donich

Beinn Luibhean, though very steep, is far more suitable as a walk with young kids. Ben Donich would be more accessible if you climbed it from Lochgoilhead, heading up Cowal Way then hitting the slopes after the forestry

Re: Rucksack Liners, yay or nay?

Dry bags for me in line with other comments. Is there still such a thing as a waterproof rucksack? I understand the weight issue but l still yearn for one again. I still have an ancient Karrimor Alpiniste in classic purple which l use for beach gear. It spent most of the 80s out on multi day Munro ...

Re: Quietiest bothies

Staoineag was relatively quiet in the 80s but anticipate given its location these days very busy. I recall carrying in from Corrour two replacement posts for end of the roof at western end of both at that time. Ian Mitchell, our venture scout leader was very active in the MBA at the time. We fixed t...
