Blowing the New Year Cobwebs Away in Angus - #2

Day 2 post Christmas & New Year local walk with Richard. Quite tired after the previous days walk so decided to take on this local Corbett with easy access. Steep from the get go with a lot of snow on the track from 500m to the summit which tested fitness (poor!). Dry day but low cloud the sun t...

Blowing the New Year Cobwebs Away in Angus - #1

Post New Year walk with Richard tackling a local Fiona/Graham that Richard hadn't done. Mostly a good track but snow deep in places making going quite slow. A bit of rain/sleet about and very low cloud so no views. Still a great walk to blow away the Christmas & New Year cobwebs. Only about 30 m...

Post Christmas Bridge of Cally Circular

Post Christmas walk to test my fitness out (poor!) and first exploration of the local countryside since I moved to Bridge of Cally at the end of July 2023. Followed the Bridge of Cally circular from Alltrails.com (partly along the Cateran Trail). Lovely sunny winters day. Good forestry tracks althou...

Stob Ban (Mamores)

Week in a cottage in Ballachulish with Gill, Gavin and Clive (left Tues). After the soaking on the previous day, my struggles with fitness, and more importantly storm Agnes forecast to hit around 2pm I was happy to suggest to Gav that we pick off Stob Ban with Al the next day instead of anything lon...

Mamores Misery

Week in a cottage in Ballachulish with Gill, Gavin and Clive (left Tues). Gavin & I attempted to tackle Stob Ban (Mamores) and Mullach nan Coirean with Al Ewen but huge deluge on ascent of Mullach nan Coirean completely soaked us through. Had to use Al's group shelter on ascent due to heavy rain...

Exhaustion on the Eastern South Glen Shiel Ridge

Getting repetitive but another gloriously hot & sunny day for my final effort of the two week holiday to Skye & Kintail. Clive had left for home early the same morning so just Al and I. Setting off I was very tired and knew I was in for a struggle. The route to the top of the first Munro inv...

The Steepest Munro?

A remote hill rising above Arnsidale next to Loch Hourn. The sun was blazing from the off on the steep ascent. The final 300m from Bealach Arnasdail was very steep on a horrible narrow scree stalkers path. The views were superb. The descent via Coillie Mhialairigh wasn't too bad. Just Al Ewen and I ...

Western Glen Shiel Ridge

With another week of hot & sunny weather forecast (after Skye) I decided in consultation with Al Ewen (heat & lack of water on the ridge) that we'd spilt the South Glen Shiel ridge into 2 x days as per the SMC Munros book. Fortunately for the climb onto the ridge we had some low cloud and in...

Magnificent Bla Bheinn (Skye)

The third glorious hot & sunny day in a row on Skye this time for the magnificent hill Bla Bheinn. Tired after the previous 2 days of sustained scrambling/rock climbing it was an energy sapping climb under cloudless skies but the views on the summit, particularly of the Cuillin Ridge, were simpl...

The An Dorus Hills (Skye)

Another glorious hot & sunny day on the Skye Cuillin. Having missed out Sgurr na Banachdich on the Inn Pin day on my previous trip Josh took us on a route that combined that followed by the 2 x An Dorus hills (joined by Clive). The scrambling between Banachdich and Ghreadaidh was 'interesting' (...

The Hardest Munro (Skye)

Glorious hot & sunny day to tackle, in my opinion, the hardest Munro Sgurr nan Gillean along with Am Bastier & Bruach na Frithe. Josh Robinson (guide-Gritstone Mountaineering) & Clive. Tricky & exposed rock climb to Sgurr nan Gillean summit from Bealach a'Bhastier with 2 x abseils fr...

Shapely Stob Ban (Grey Corries)

After the short warm up the previous day it was time to test the fitness out on a Munro. Richard & I decided that Stob Ban (Grey Corries) would be a good choice as it's less than 1000m of ascent but nice & steep with a long walk in. Mild day, almost muggy, so base layers all the way to the t...

Fiona Peat Hag Fest

Travelled up to Newtonmore with Gill for a few warm up days with Richard in preparation for Skye/Kintail at end of May. Made a trip up towards Nairn / Moy for a Fiona that Richard was keen on and ideal for a first walk since Christmas. Huge Peat hags but not too bad following a very dry April althou...

Full on Winter conditions on Mount Blair

Full on winter conditions on Mount Blair. Very icy roads at start, frozen track/path up hill, snowing on way up, heaving going in ankle deep snow towards summit, very cold (crampons required). Great Christmas walk!
