Re: Ben Wyvis conditions?

Not a perfect indicator but have a look at https://www.sais.gov.uk/ where the Northern Cairngorms will give an idea

Looking at the range I'd probably want both axe & crampons (and a lot of slogging stamina)!

Re: Road Closure Cairngorm

Even if the request is not accepted, bare in mind that the council does not clear the road, staff @CML do!

So if both Sugarbowl and Ski Area Carpark are accessable, the road may not be passable in bad weather (or after snow)!

Stove is a meths "shampoo lid" & mug for rehydrated meals, a 4 season down sleeping bag + mat & the only spare clothes are a few changes of socks...

Re: Winter boot recomendations

As a rule, I find,
Scarpa - too narrow
Meindl - too low volume (but wide enough)
Asolo - too narrow, too low volume
La Sportiva - seems to be very very model/year dependant

at present Salewa are what fits

but with all of the mentioned there are exceptions!

Re: Scrambling Boots and shoes

You don’t need anything special unless you’ve been reading too many magazine articles? Unless on the cuillin , I use old skanky footwear as the gabro destroys it. This I would agree with, having done scrambles in anything from approach shoes to B3 boots (and even a few (lowi grade) rock climbs in B...

Re: Winter hillwalking advice for a newbie

I'd add a headtorch to the list of carried gear, along with either a spare or spare batteries,
and think about starting the approaches in the dark!
