Lairig Eilde & Lairig Gartain

Dear WH members, I'm writing a bit in emergency: being currently in Fort William after have done the WHW (report to do !), with the current weather, I gave up the idea to do the Ben Nevis (it's nonsense), and looking for alternatives for the two next days. I wanted your opinion concerning the possib...

Re: Equipment for the WHW (in hostels and B&B) ?

I finally went to make my big shopping. I followed your advice concerning the waterproof trouser. I found a 2.5 layers one at a decent price (~80€). Associated to the GoreTex Pro jacket i ordered, I can let my poncho at home and save some space. I bought some barefoot shoes in promotion (brand Merre...

Re: [Glasgow] Shop selling the Ordance Survey maps?

Thanks to both of you. Technically, i'm staying a night in Glasgow before starting the WHW, so i will have a bit of time to go to any shop.

The price on Dash4it is quite interesting. Would you recommend the normal or the waterproof versions of the maps?

[Glasgow] Shop selling the Ordance Survey maps?

Dear members, does any of you know a shop where I could find the Ordnance Survey maps in Glasgow or Milngavie? I would like to buy them for the WHW. That might represent some weight and be a bit expensive, but i love high quality maps. I represents some memories and helps me when i write my travel r...

Re: Three days around the Königssee (Germany, Bavaria)

Day 2: from the Wasseralm to the Kärlinger Haus I arrived the evening before in the Wasseralm (1423 m). This mountain hut is one of the most remote within the park, as the only way to reach it are by foot or by helicopter (most of the other huts can be reached by 4-wheel drive cars), and is compose...

Re: Three days around the Königssee (Germany, Bavaria)

Yes, more to come

For the shot of the summit of the Schneibstein, I was lucky to be over the clouds :D

By the way, I'm considering to redo this hike next month with a friend.

Re: Waterproof paper: is it worth it?

I used some waterproof paper called stone paper as biologist on the field. Useful when you want to make some strong labels for your tubes, or when you have to walk in wet or rainy environments. Technically, i decided to have now two field books, one water resistant (that comes with me on the field) ...

Re: Three days around the Königssee (Germany, Bavaria)

Day 1: from Carl-von-Stahl-Haus to the Wasseralm The first part follows the Weg 416, along a large crest, up to the summit of the Schneibstein (2276m). The border between Germany and Austria follow the crest, so it was unclear in which country I was. IMG_8907_s.jpg A view backward allows to see the...

Three days around the Königssee (Germany, Bavaria)

In Germany , one of the most beautiful national parks is located in the Alps, at the southeast extremity of the country, at the border between Germany and Austria, at few kilometers of the city of Salzburg (hometown of Mozart): the Berchtesgaden National Park . This national park protects the larges...

Re: Equipment for the WHW (in hostels and B&B) ?

Thanks for the explanations concerning the poncho. I would agree if camping but the title says hostels and B&B's so just can't see the point in carrying clothes or to be more specific carrying limited eqipment when you've already decided to stay in accommodation. I've walked it twice, 1st time c...

Re: Equipment for the WHW (in hostels and B&B) ?

For the Neoprene shoes, i keep in mind.

But the baggage carrier, i'm out. The WHW will be an outlet after a PhD defense, a way to disconnect, to not blast. That's why i want to do it with all my equipment in my backpack.

Re: Equipment for the WHW (in hostels and B&B) ?

@basscadet, @Fairweather Softie and @EileanB: thanks for the advices. For the short, no need, all my hiking pants are zip-off, consequence of their use in tropical regions. Even if i expect to stay mostly in hostels, I want to have my bag with me during the hike. I've seen that it's possible to make...

Re: Equipment for the WHW (in hostels and B&B) ?

@Mal: Yes, his list greatly helped me :D For the bothy bag, i discover that with your message. For footwear , I guess that my boots Jack Wolfskin (with membrane Texapore3) are more than enough (went up to nearly 3500m with it), associated to different sets of hiking socks (all previously tested on t...
