new to Scottish hillwalking?

I recently wrote an article on Scottish hillwalking for my employer's wellbeing newsletter. I thought I might share it here, in case it helps anyone who's thinking of taking up hillwalking but is unsure where to start! Recently started a new job or new degree in Scotland? Thought about taking up hil...

Re: Beinn Mhanach

I did Beinn Mhanach with a mountain bike, from the A82, in fairly warm weather. I think there were seven fords to cross, and I did get wet feet. For the cycle part, I was wearing old trainers; I then put on my walking boots just for the hill. Not sure what this expedition would feel like in cold wea...

Re: Fide Coastal Path and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code

I'd like to second what walkerali says. I live locally, and don't even check for tidal times any more - when I get to the bit that may be flooded at high tide, and it turns out to be under water, I just climb that steep slope, cross some fences and bypass that bit of the coastal path. It's all part ...

Re: Clegs.

'Jungle Formula' insect repellent, available from Boots. Doesn't cost the world. Is DEET-based. Seems to repel clegs, midges, keds. Smell still overpowering hours after the walk has finished and you're entering a crowded pub. Make sure to pack it in such a way that you have access to it *as soon as*...

Re: Supposed to be long hike but...

If you put the seats down, a scruffy old mountain bike will fit in most cars!

Re: Newbie with sore legs and feet

Sorry to be confusing: what I was alluding to, about iron supplements, was the period. (I'm female, despite my username). If you bleed once a month, that may not affect some women and their ability to do sports, but some women will feel fainter around the time of their periods, or during menopause, ...

Re: Newbie with sore legs and feet

I've had good experiences with exposing myself to very cold water at the end of the walk - like in a loch that you pass by... Feels shockingly cold at the time, but when you come out of the water after 10 mins, you feel like a new-born baby, and the effect still lasts for days afterwards, with less ...

Re: Where to park for Ben Klibreck?

I was there a few weeks ago and initially parked in the layby (i.e. a passing place) nearest to the building site at the bottom of the slope. A friendly guy from the building site then came and said he was worried that my car would get damaged by the big lorries going past later that day. He said I'...

Re: Lost on Liathach - Scott Fleece

There's a separate 'Lost and Found' forum where you might also want to post your query:

Hope you find the fleece - my significant other has retraced our steps a few times to retrieve items forgotten by me...

Re: Midges mid June Scotland this year

- if midges are such a pain, how come they don't get mentioned in historic writing? Old Rabbie Burns moaned about everything and anything, but doesn't mention midges. Does this mean that something has changed environmentally to make them worse than they have been before? Are our diets different? et...

Re: Cairngorms Area

Are you sure 'some are next to Ben Nevis'? Are you getting your Aonach Beags mixed up? (There are two Munros of that name).
