Beinn Mhòr via the American Monument

This was my first time back on Islay in about 20 years. I wasn't a hill walker back then - I was more interested in bagging distilleries than hills  There's twice as many now (distilleries, not hills) and I still like whisky, so we visited a couple. I'd had high hopes of climbing Beinn Bheigier...

Whitehope Heights

Parked at the Devil's Beeftub viewpoint on the A701 for my last Donald in the area (still a few elsewhere to do). The day was a bit overcast and the hills more winter straw than lush green as in the WH pic! Still, decent views over the Devil's Beeftub. And having seen the drop into it from that shar...

Windy Standard and tops

Back in Glen Afton, this time to visit Windy Standard and it's two subsidiary tops Dugland and Keoch Rig. For one reason or another, since November winter had been a series of short walks up various subs, so I was looking forward to a longer walk. I parked in the car park just downstream of the rese...

Law Kneis

I parked at the Ettrick Marshes car park by the Tima Water, and crossed the bridge. This seems like a new bridge, and you can see the site of an old bridge next to it, no longer there but still marked on the map. IMG20240224140147.jpg I followed the track north and very soon encountered a bit of a p...

Turner Cleuch Law and The Wiss

I parked at the cattle grid near the wonderfully named Windy House on the B709. The first hill was Turner Cleuch Law - a 2K round trip on the south side of the road. Fairly steep at first, but shielded from the wind by the forestry immediately to the west. IMG20240203134856.jpg IMG20240203140114.jpg...

Cairnpapple and The Knock

I've ignored this hill for years, even though it's been by far the closest remaining one to where I live for some time. But on this day I needed something quick and close, and this fit the bill. It was a cold, still winter morning, with the sun low in the sky. The minor roads up to here were icy. I ...

Benarty Hill Circular

I started up the steps from the road, ignoring the sign about tree cutting. I figured I'd take avoiding action if I came across any. There were a fair few people out, and this seemed to be the prevailing attitude. I followed the route up to the summit, and sat and enjoyed the view over Loch Leven fo...

Dungavel and Lamington Hills

Dungavel Hill Distance: 3.4km Time taken: 1h Ascent: 230m Dungavel Hill first - a quick one to start with. I parked by the cattle grid on Howgate Road, as usually frequented by climbers of Dungavel. I climbed over the gate into the field and found the very soggy track heading up. There were no sign...

Eildon Hills

I parked just off Dingleton Road, near where St Cuthbert's Way heads up into the hills. I followed the path up a flight of wooden steps and up a straight narrow path between a hedge and a field of sheep. Looking back, the mist settled over Melrose was visible. After passing a couple of fields there ...

Newtyle Hill from Dunkeld

I parked in a small picnic area just inside Dunkeld, on the back road that becomes Brae Street. I walked along the road out of town for a short distance, then along the track sign-posted for Loch of Lowes. IMG20231229083443.jpg IMG20231229084027.jpg After about half a mile I turned off this track on...

Pykestone Hill and The Scrape

This was a revisit to Pykestone Hill, in far less summery, sunny conditions to those prevailing on the previous occasion. Truth be told, the blazing sun and lack of cover made the hike from Drumelzier up to Pykestone quite a slog last time. This time easier. The downside was the fog on the higher gr...

Bareback Knowe and Windlwstraw Law

I've been up Windlwstraw before, the last time from Blackhopebyre. On that occasion the sun and snow-clad upper reaches made it a bit of a frozen white winter wonderland. This time it was the more typical dark-green, brown and boggy  For this visit I started down the road a bit at Glentress and...

Goseland Hill

I visited Goseland Hill near Biggar for a short walk as a prelude to visiting Windlestraw later. This was in an attempt to follow the decent weather around, which wasn't forecast to stay in one place for very long! I parked in a space next to the track up to Gosland, on the road to the south. I head...
