Re: The Paps - small but, perfectly formed!

Very entertaining and useful report; and may I say this is perhaps the cleverest title I have come across on this site!

Peak identification requested

Can someone identify this peak for me? I saw it from the ferry, crossing from Armadale (Skye) to Mallaig. You could see it on the mainland, in what I presume is the Knoydart area. It looks impossibly steep and challenging and very distinctive on the skyline!

Re: Remoteness epitomized: Dun Scaith on Skye

Thanks to everyone for their positive comments.

I can totally see how, if you take away the view of the distant mountains, the ruin itself would be quite ordinary and unmemorable. And thanks for the new word to add to my vocabulary (dreich), very useful!

Re: Magnificent Marsco

Marsco is more popular than it used to be Really? Because the day I climbed it, I saw a grand total of 1 person. That's after taking the left at the burn; the main path along Glen Sligachan was very busy indeed. But Marsco itself was totally empty, and that's in early June so a pretty busy time for...

Re: Magnificent Marsco

the lower section adjacent to the burn is hard going and very wet... Actually, I was there was during a warm dry spell, and squishy ground was a only minor annoyance. I can only imagine how much worse that section would be during a wet season. And with your tally of peaks, you definitely should tac...

Magnificent Marsco

I had read some great things about Marsco, and driving around Skye for several days, one cannot help but be attracted by its unique and rugged profile. From the Sligachan Hotel, it certainly dominates the skyline, and is visible from many other places. I saved this walk for my last full day on the i...

Neist Point circuit

After coming down from Waterstein Head ( https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=82897 ), I headed for nearby Neist Point. I had seen many photos of this remarkable headland before coming to Skye, and this evening looked promising for some neat sunset lighting. $matches[2] From...

The direct route to Waterstein Head

There is a route for Waterstein Head on WH, but it is a long one with a very remote starting point. I opted to do get there in a much more obvious and straightforward fashion. This is a short little route but with some good moderate slopes, and keeps you on the edge of a most dramatic cliff with spe...

A bit too popular: the Coral Beach on Skye

Reaching the start of the Coral Beach walk requires a lengthy slog on a road which is barely deserving of that label: it looks like it hasn't been maintained since a squadron of Goering's JU-87s used it for target practice! After 4 miles of futile attempts to avoid the bomb craters, I reached the ca...

Island exploration -- Oronsay near Skye

The notion of walking to an island was appealing enough that it brought me out to Ullinish in order to try out this walk. And I am very glad I did, because it proved to be a rewarding walk in so many ways. It's short, easy to navigate, with great views and also lots of opportunities to improvise. Th...

Remoteness epitomized: Dun Scaith on Skye

What a terrific place this is! The drive to get there is a little challenging, all single track, and you feel you are leaving the civilised world altogether. And once you get to the coast and park at the beach, you do feel you have left it. I did this walk in the afternoon, around 6 p.m. in early Ju...

Beyond the Old Man to the top of The Storr

The area around the Old Man of Storr is one of the most popular on Skye, and from the car park to the bottom of the Old Man it was fairly well packed with people. As it turns out, once you've gotten to the interesting rock formations, you've done most of the ascent already and actually getting to th...

Cuillin the Second

With weather continuing to be crystal clear, and with one Cuillin already in the bag (see https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=82186 ), it was time to attempt a second. As it turned out, Bruach na Frithe was a bit easier than Sgurr na Banachdich, and the views even better. A...

Leaving the crowds behind -- Bioda Buidhe & Quiraing

Being on Skye, we had to see the Quiraing, but fortunately I had done my WH research and had read about the Bioda Buidhe side trip as well. We did both, with Biod Buidhe first which worked out great; by the time we got to the Quiraing most of the tourists had left. I'll leave the Quiraing aside for ...

Gorgeous photos! Just loved the one at the beach, at Mol an Tighe. Those colours are amazing, who would ever guess this is Scotland!
