Glen Torridon burns situation

Ahoy fellow hill obsessed types. Does anyone know how the burns are looking in Torridon? Tackling Liathach tomorrow and without the burns flowing on the way up and down, it's probably not going to happen. I ascended her last May when the weather was similarly scorching and I went through 5L, too muc...

Re: Newcomers setting foot in the Highlands

I don't wish to put you off, but I feel that the midge situation hasn't quite been emphasised. Perhaps my mental scars run deeper than most, being a born and bred highland man. You MUST buy a midge net!! You WILL need this!! As mentioned previously, wind keeps them away from you. This is the only th...

Glen Affric Road - CLOSED!

Thought I'd give everyone a heads up, could save someone a rather long journey. Glen Affric road is closed until the 9th of June. No idea whats going on. No signs of course, until you get into Cannich. Drove up to the start of the single track section and it is indeed closed off, diggers etc in the ...

Beinn Airigh Charr - Bikeable?

Hi folks,

Just looking for a bit of advice regarding said Corbett. How much of the walk could be tackled by bike? Would it be ok to cycle up to the sheepfold, (marked on the OS map) at the sharp left turn before heading uphill?

Any advice appreciated
Andy

Re: News: Charities unite to fight plan for Cairngorms New T

I remember reading about these plans in the paper a while ago now, but since it all went quite I presumed everyone had come to there senses. I have a few questions to start the debate. Say they build 1500 houses, that represents accommodation for say 3000 people (a conservative estimate). Who is goi...

Current snow (if any) - Torridon

Hi folks, Does anybody happen to know the current snow/ice situation on any of the glen torridon peaks? Supposed to be taking a friend for his first ascent of Liathach tomorrow but I will be aborting said plan if there's even a hint of ice up there. Ben Eighe is the back up! Cheers Hope everyone is ...

Re: Camping and star gazing

I once camped at the base of Slioch - midge epoch. The sky was worth it however, with no moon we could see more stars than you could shake a large stick at.

Re: Windfarms..................That old cherry

This is one topic I generally avoid, I tend to get visions of beating politicians with a big stick when thinking about the damned things. I offer my take on the matter. Frankly, I think the amount of money that is being ploughed into renewables at the moment is ridiculous. The current energy 'predic...

Re: Cuillin magnetic deviation

Any areas of watch out for and areas that a compass is especially reliable - or is it quite random? The Cuillin are formed from rock composed primarily of ferromagnetic materials, therefore whenever you check your compass you are essentially just checking the direction of the local magnetic field d...

A rare day on the Ben

Well this was my first taste of the Ben - and i'll be lucky to get the same views the next time I do it. I set off from Glen Nevis at 11:15, which left me with roughly 5 hours to get up and down the Ben before the sunset. I actually found this quite tough going, took me around 2hr 45 mins to get to ...

Re: Sore knees coming down hills - any ideas?

I had problems descending with my right knee earlier this year. I would describe the pain as being focused on the right side of this knee, a 'sharp' pain. We have a new physio in the town who has built a good reputation so I thought id give him a bash. He actually performs a type of massage, which i...

Re: Mountaineering Fitness

At 6ft and 130lbs you are significantly 'under weight' - Your first challenge is to build muscles that will help haul yourself up these hills. Take high protein food for your lunch\snacks whilst out on the hill, meat filled sandwiches, protein bars etc. If you dont get out much then swim inbetween -...
