Re: Cape Wrath Trail Fast and Light: 230 miles in 11 days

Brilliant report and so much useful information it is incredible. Would you recommend this for a semi fit but very experienced hillwalker/rock climber who is ow aged 64? Allan Allan, I agree with motorlaunch, age is definitely not the barrier but skills, a leveled head and determination. I'd recomm...

Re: Cape Wrath Trail Done

Well done Flip!

It is a classic Scottish trip with endless rain and the sun at the end.....
I hope to do this trail again in the coming years too.

Cheers,
Gilad

Re: last 6 stages of the Cape Wrath Trail

how difficult would you consider the terrain between Ullapool and Oykel Bridge and from OB to that camping spot? who knows, if weather permits, and i leave Ullapool (very) early, i might make it in one go although it's probably wishful thinking. You can definitely make it from Ullapool to Oykel Bri...

Re: Hiking in June CWT - baselayer question

Hi Ivan, First - good luck! make sure you have enough bug protection, including a head net as midges will be out in forces. Second, even in June, the CWT can have some really nasty and cold weather, so I'd recommend a really thin (less than 150 g/sqrm) short sleeve Merino shirt that you can pretty ...

Re: last 6 stages of the Cape Wrath Trail

I'm pretty surprised how fully booked everything is, I'd recommend relying on bothies more... If you are stuck around Rhiconich, you can continue to Kinlochbrevie where there is a nice hotel, worth checking? If you are not sure about getting too many maps, you can just print the problematic sections...

Re: England In September

England is pretty diverse in terms of vegetation and terrain, so really depends on where you are going to. Most of the fells and mountains around the northern national parks are brown/orange all year round as they are mostly bog. The average countryside will stay mainly green as grazing encourages g...

Re: Hiking watches

Been using the Garmin Fenix 2 for a few months now and I enjoy it. As PTC said, battery won't last more then a couple of days, but I find the features excellent and I love doing faster navigation with pre-uploaded gpx files (saves the need for a handheld GPS). Also came with a HRM that is excellent ...

Re: Rucksack which one

From my experience you will end up carrying as much stuff as your rucksack allows you - so the bigger the pack the more you carry. For me staying comfortably outdoors is being light, so I aim to carry very little. For most people I think up to 40L for winter and 30L for summer days is more than enou...

Re: last 6 stages of the Cape Wrath Trail

HI Sjiep, I've walked the CWT last May and doing so again this coming April. I won't repeat what was written so far - Andy's and Guinnessman's replies are great (they both have given great responses). i actually wrote the full trip report here - http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9...

Re: OS Map Subscriptions

Been using it for a few months now and I think it is a really good tool. they seem to be working hard on getting it improved every day. I use to do trip planning, create gpx file for my GPS watch and print maps in various scales for any trip (I like mixed scales for various needs). Definitely recomm...
