Re: Outdoor enthusiasts and ageing

Interesting and thought provoking thread. :D It's kinda weird to have long-standing posters on here reveal their age. In my head, when I've read posts in the past, I have an image of us all as young vigorous 30 somethings.* *Except Sgurr of course, who is WH's own much revered Golden Oldie ...

Re: Outdoor enthusiasts and ageing

Gordymck, I didn't start until I was 51 so hopefully that's an encouragement for you. Same here, I was 51 before I did my first proper hill, Ben Ledi. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50959754246_76494c6b55_k.jpg Ben Ledi 11th Sep 2015 by robert irvine , on Flickr Wish I'd discovered hillwalking...

Re: The Milk Run

Re: The Milk Run

Hi Gordie 12
Cracking photos :D

I went for a walk in the snow down to buy a frothy fruit-flavoured drink from my local shop.
Unfortunately I ended up sliding on my backside down a hill.
Yes, it was the cresta run.
Boom boom.

Re: The hills of Glen Orchy: views to the left of them ...

Hi Huff n Puff.
Cracking photos :D
I did this route a week after you and had lovely weather as well.
Descent path was a bit of a quagmire, at least you had it a bit drier with your slight detour.
Regards.

Re: Just saying like

Fantastic stuff. "Today, Saturday 16 January 2021 at 16:58 local time, a team of 10 Nepalese mountaineers completed the highly coveted first winter ascent of K2, the second highest mountain in the world and the last 8000er to be climbed in the coldest season. News of the successful summit was p...

Re: So near yet so far away.

Hi Giant Stoneater. Thanks for that mate. I heard Nicolas speech when I was out for a walk today, didn't have time to read through everything until later on. Looks like the big expedition could be back on. Regards. Robert Good luck with the big exped. You will be following in the footsteps of mount...

Benvane

Thick fog on the drive up from Stirling. The skies cleared just before Callander and into the bright early morning sun. I tried to get up Benvane two years ago, it was not a good day. After turning left at Balquidder I drove over the Stronvar bridge and then turned left again. This was the wrong roa...

Re: So near yet so far away.

1168 ft! A mountain indeed from where I am confined in Oxfordshire. I have a choice of White Horse Hill at 844 ft or Bald Hill at 842 ft, current and previous county tops. Both involve driving more than five miles, so not in guidance range strictly. Locally my residence is at 443 ft, the highest po...

Re: So near yet so far away.

@Maxie23 I feel for you and it seems like just a bad roll of the dice that you cant climb these hills while someone living further away could climb them legally. Another strange one is for mountain folk from Moray. They have 7 munros in their local authority area that they can climb legally...

So near yet so far away.

The two Lochearnhead munros, Ben Vorlich and Stuc a'Chroin are 28 miles away from my home, as the crow flies. They are also in a different council area so are inaccessible at the present time. :( The photos were taken from a local park where I used to walk my dogs and I have used my camera to captur...

Re: Higher than Dumyat – Our Ochils Lockdown Challenge 2020

Hi Lesley.

Fantastic stuff, well done.

The Ochils are my local range and I have spent many enjoyable days up there.

Did I see you and your friend on the top of Ben Cleuch on either the 31st August or the 19th of September this year.

Regards.

Re: Your coldest day?

The coldest day for me was on Auchnafree hill, next to Ben Chonzie, in January 2017. There was a North wind on that day and on the top according to my anemometer ( I love gadgets ) it was blowing at a steady 25 mph with occasional gusts up to 40 mph. I didn't take many photos, I was apprehensive abo...
