Re: Souther Fell, easy does it for our first hill this year!

Yes, it was a pity about the weather, we'll go back in better conditions and hopefully puddleless, it was a bit soggy underfoot  We were looking at High Rigg on our way to the circle and thought it would be a nice walk from this direction, might give it a go some time :D Cheers It was a good ...

Re: Souther Fell, easy does it for our first hill this year!

You should have been there a week earlier! I did High Rigg from Castlerigg Stone Circle the previous Sunday and it was gloriously sunny with snow on the high fells. Those puddles by the stones were still there though.

Re: “Easy” hills to climb - north Argyll / Loch Leven

Beinn Lora (Marilyn/Sub 2000) is a super-easy ascent from Benderloch. Tourist path from the car park almost to the top and great views down the Firth of Lorn.

Re: Hart Fell when you're scared of heights (doggy style)

I've got over any fear of heights, but still had to crawl to the summit of Saddle Yoke when it was a bit windy, to avoid being blown over by gusts. The rest of the horseshoe route was fine. Maybe there's something about the shape of the hills at that particular spot that funnels the wind?

Re: Best food on the A9

The bar round the side of the Atholl Arms Hotel in Blair Atholl does decent food.

Re: Cycling in the hills

The usual cycling approaches to various Munros where there are good estate tracks should be suitable. It may depend whether you are OK with climbs on the tracks though (or have an e-bike). E.g. Linn of Dee to White Bridge is flat, but Dalwhinnie to Ben Alder Lodge and Loch Pattack has some ups and d...

Re: Is The Red House to Glen Feshie route "cyclable"?

As you get within a couple of miles of the Glen Feshie bothy watch out for a bit where the track disappears into the river and the path becomes pretty eroded (take some care here). From there the path is decent if a little overgrown and you'll soon reach the bothy. We biked in from Glen Feshie in 2...

Re: Anyone done the MacGillicuddy's Reeks Traverse?

I did the ridge but not the full horseshoe at the end in 1993, when I got my parents to drop me off at the Eastern end where the ponies and traps go and pick me up from the NW end of the horseshoe. I had good weather but the initial ascent was still a 45 degree bog (not unusual for Irish hills). I r...

Re: Hurry Up Harris - Weasel Hols '23 Part 2

Great hills those.

The artisan mustard shop at Leverburgh is worth a stop. It's run by a nice lady from Dusseldorf who has an honesty box outside and her mustards are really good - I must go back to stock up again!

Re: Small isles ferry times

The Bella Jane in Elgol, Skye also do RIB trips to Canna, which get there in under an hour. I was in a group which chartered one for a day so we were able to visit the high points on Canna and Sanday, but they also do regular trips you can book a place on individually.

Re: Beinn Dearg via Glen Bruar

I biked it two years ago. IIRC there were a few cows around Bruar Lodge by the bridge on the way out, but not on the road and I had no problems with them.

Re: A splendid sea journey with a bonus lesser-spotted Maril

Excellent! I have my trip to Barra and the Priest Islands booked for June, so it's interesting to see a report from there.

Re: Meall nan Eun from Glen Kinglass

Interesting route - when I did Meall nan Eun from that side a few years ago, I left the bike at the Clashgour diversion and followed the "path" West of Loch Dochard. Fortunately, it was after a prolonged dry spell, and I only went into the bog up to my knee about 4 times!

Re: Beinn Eibhinn and Aonach Beag from the north

That's the route I've been planning for my next Munro-bagging expedition (though probably with a wild camp around the Allt Cam). Thanks for recce'ing it for me and confirming the Tops are a worthwhile diversion.

Re: Rucksack Liners, yay or nay?

I just use a water softener / dishwasher salt bag (equivalent to a rubble bag I imagine) for the main compartment and a small Apple Store bag (with the drawstring) for the top compartment. I've never bothered with specialist drybags, but may use the odd shop plastic bag for bits and pieces. My campi...
