I have walked, cycled, skied and driven(!) to that summit....

What an idyllic commute! I'm guessing you worked in hydro or forestry.

Creag Gharbh bike n hike

Earlier this year I was planning an exciting multi-day camping, hiking and bagging adventure in the Loch Lednock area, but my thyroid had other ideas. It seems to be back in balance now and I’ve got lots more energy - just in time for shorter days and cold nights. So I’ve been devising alternative w...

Re: The Military Road That Wasn't There

Great report, which I came across as I'm thinking of climbing this hill tomorrow, but from the south. Those swamps look horrendous, and interestingly I did a low-level walk on the same day near Loch Doon, Dalmellington. It was also horrendously swampy - there were five of us and we all got soaked. S...

Re: Range of the Awesome Hand

I want your job! I think Kirrereoch and Tarfessock are among the best Donalds - not too tussocky, fantastic views in clear weather and away from the crowds. I did the same as you when I climbed these - ie, I didn't specifically look for Tarfessock East Top, however I recorded my walk on Strava which...

Re: Cruach Near Catastrophe!

Gosh, lots to ponder on this report, as a marilyn bager, i can identify to forest warfare, storms are becoming more frequent and fallen trees seem more of a problem than in the past. Thankfully all ive ended with is a filthy mood and many pairs of ripped trousers, Glad it ended ok, really scary exp...

Re: Cruach Near Catastrophe!

I’ve posted an update to m3docs post explaining the correct forest break. If you gone right rather than left you’d have found it. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=93795&p=477801#p477801 Thanks. If I climb it again, I'll remember this. It looks more direct too. I've ...

Re: Cruach Near Catastrophe!

Great report and a lesson to us all - especially when tackling the smaller hills. I have lost count of how many jungle warfare experiences we have had - one we will never forget is a Marilyn in the Borders near Ettrick, Law Kneis - the ironic thing is we could have avoided the forest by walking alo...

Re: Cruach Near Catastrophe!

It concerns me that with Cruach Neuran recently "promoted" to Graham status, others might get into the same pickle. Maybe the best route out now is via the Cruach Neuran burn. Indeed. However, when I descended the Cruach Neuran Burn in July 2021 there were landslips on the steep west bank...

Re: Cruach Near Catastrophe!

Well that sounded horrendous, but at least you’re out now. I climbed Cruach nan Capull in 2015 and had a bad experience in the forest, but it was just me being a div really (came in from the East, but then tried to descend straight from the summit down into the forest). There wasn’t much tre...

Re: Cruach Near Catastrophe!

Hi natubat When we ascended Cruach Neuran in 2019 there was no treefall. However, when I attempted to follow malky_c's descent route off Cruach Ruadh (Kinloch Laggan) in April this year 2022 I encountered similar horrendous treefall as you encountered. I blame Storm Arwin 28 November 2021 and the 3...

Cruach Near Catastrophe!

This is a cautionary account of a hillwalking trip that nearly turned into a catastrophe. It’s been a good reminder to me of why every winter trip, no matter how easy the hills seem, needs to be taken very seriously. I got up at 5.50am and set off for Dunoon, hoping to bag as many Fionas and new Gra...

Re: New Grahams!!!

There's also Creag na h-Eararuidh, It hasn't - Beinn Dearg is still there, just a swap of tops like the good old days of Munros tables. A nearby crag has been appropriated for the top name. The one that really bugs me, again a pair of Docharty's is the two on Ben Armine. One has become Ben Armine p...

Re: New Grahams!!!

There's also Creag na h-Eararuidh, which replaces Beinn Dearg, although I think this was established a few years ago. The whole thing is very confusing! I think it's weird to find myself bogging Grahams anyway - just something that crept up on me, so I will happily add these to make the task more ch...
