Re: How has hillwalking changed?

Hostels have gone in many areas e.g. north of Glasgow no more Inverbeg, Ardgartan, Loch Ard, Loch Venachar, Balquhidder, Killin, let alone Fintry, Glendevon. Stayed at some of those. Wish I'd stayed at more. Of course the idea was that you could walk from one hostel to the other. Nowadays car owner...

Re: Food hints

I'm a bit of a fan of a Scotch Egg on walks - quite often have one of those. Alternatively, a sandwich, often on pitta as it's more controllable! If I'm staying with my parents, it's often hummus or tuna, as long as I remember to remind them I don't eat tinned salmon! Another alternative is oatcakes...

Re: Aviemore to Inverness advice

I reckon you could sensibly do it in 2 days, with the bulk of it on the old military road (though that would mean coming onto the road a couple of times where there were fewer route options!). I've put in a GPX to show roughly what I mean. I should point out that where it appears to join the A9 ther...

Re: Longest distance covered in a single day hillwalk?

I did the White Mounth round last summer - 29 km and 1200m of ascent, and I was pretty knackered by the end of it. The worst of it was that trudge back along the loch at the end. I definitely ought not to have driven back afterwards - I was doing that cling to the steering wheel and talk to keep you...

Re: Help out a clueless Canadian?

I'm going to ever so slightly disagree with Caberfeidh on the water thing - along a lot of the West Highland Way there is a great deal of human activity, much of it by people with very little other experience of the outdoors. Accordingly, while I'm usually pretty blase about water (because in Scotla...

Re: Would you abandon your best mate?

Ooof. I think this is a really tricky one. I'm quite lucky in that both of the dogs I walk with alone are terriers, and thus small enough and light enough to chuck in a backpack if necessary. However, a number of dogs sometimes come out with my walking group, all the way up to a massive husky! Somet...

Re: Wallpapering with OS Maps

We've got Skye on one wall in 1:50k - it was put on using wall paper paste, I believe. I think some faint pencil lines went on the wall to help line up the gridlines before hand. I do recall a lot of holding bits of map up while someone farted around with the spirit level.

Re: Scottish National Trail Through Hike

First, a bit about me so you can gauge if its physically possible. I through hiked (2200 miles) the Appalachian Trail last year. That's south US to north US in 5.5 months. The mountains didn't get very high (only about 5000 ft.). No ice picks were necessary but there was some scrambling. I was able...

Re: Safety Clothing

Like may others I had never thought before about carrying a high-vis vest - when I helped out with DoE, the kids were encouraged to have at least one or two per group if there was any road walking involved, and I have taken one before when I knew I was going to be on the road for a while and feared ...

Re: Buying Fuel in Milngavie

I seriously doubt you will be able to just pick them up (thought not impossible given the number of WHW walkers that come through). Your best bet, if you are really determined to start early, is to arrange for a click and collect order to somewhere in the town - either from Tesco itself or from anot...

Re: walking trollheimen norway

Are you planning to stay in the hytte? If so, 65l is WAAAAY too big - you want to take the smallest bag possible, or you are tempted to fill it with stuff! If you are staying in the hytte, make sure you check whether there would be a sufficient saving to make joining the DNT worthwhile. Again, if st...

Re: Isle of Skye, Cullin walk recommendations

I went up Bla Bheinn aged about 11 or 12, but my sister, who is 4 years younger, was left at about 900m (along with our mum and the dog - we didn't just abandon her!). Like another poster we did it on a very, very nice day - I'm not sure dad would have taken me in poor weather as it would have been ...

Re: Taking my dog to Skye

If you're going up into the cuillins it might be easier / safer without the dog. I remember years ago doing Blabheinn and we had to leave the dog behind at about 800m (along with half our party - we didn't just tie the dog to a rock!) for safety reasons, though I can't remember what prompted it. Dog...

Re: First time in the highlands and wild camping

Generally in Scotland you have a right of responsible access, which includes wild camping. There is advice on the Scottish Outdoor Access website here: http://outdooraccess-scotland.com/Practical-guide/public/camping about what constitutes wild camping. There is a realtively new seasonal by-law prev...

Re: Found - Fitbit, Ben Lawers Car Park 31/08/16

Hey,

Not mine, but if you still have it, if you contact fitbit, I believe they will send you a pre-paid postage label to return it to them, and they can ID the owner and return it. I can't post a link, but you can google 'found a fitbit' for instructions.
