Re: The Military Road That Wasn't There

I'm wracking my brains to think where I encountered General Wade's military road on one of my walks. I'll get back to you. Suffice it to say I think it exists. Entertaining report, and these G-----s don't half throw up a mixed bag of adventures.

Re: Ryvoan Bothy and Lochan Uaine in the April Sunshine

'Demolishing them because of false sense of security' - what crap! They're a great asset and suit the landscape. I assume you know which ones and why? Yes, the ones 'in a treacherous landscape, and because they offer a false sense of security'. If you have an opinion or know more then you could wri...

Re: Snow chute on Beinn Eighe

Well done for being honest about your 'numptyness', or you could call it adventurousness! Your report is a good read, and we all learn from these things, so I for one would not frown. If I was to he lax about any equipment, it would be crampons. The axe is even more key, I have discovered, as it's c...

Re: Ryvoan Bothy and Lochan Uaine in the April Sunshine

You must return to do the Buachaille! Great views of the cairngorns and a safe (if strenuous) path for a family. I have fond memories of visiting the lochan and bothy en route. I also think the idea of staying is probably better than the reality, but planning to sample some to get the Cairngorms don...

Re: Wet! Wet! Wet! Giving Am Faochagach Some Welly!

Well said! Mind you, some of your pictures actually make it look beautiful. My solution was to do it in winter (well, March) and wear snow boots. They kept the mud out perfectly and were even watertight against the river crossing. The drawback, though, was sore feet and beaten up joints and muscles ...

Re: Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

Unlike flat esrthers. I do listen to good peer reviewed science. I might have to admit defeat on this one, but I note it says "almost always' distorted, and that the horizon has to be dead centre (therefore there's room to say its theoretically posdible). I'm still puzzled why the horizon in my...

Yeah, looking back on the old report, I did. It's narrower than all my other photos. I think I cropped somebody's head out of it. No cropping on this one though, and horizon is well below centre

Re: Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

Bowed horizon, but the trig point perfectly proportioned - no bowing towards the centre of the lens. I creep closer towards proof. If 60 miles is 1 degree of curve. That looks like 1 degree of curve.

Ben Loyal.
Dog with a bone now! Ben Loyal (seen from Ben Hope). No bowing whatsoever to the horizon. Why not? (If the lens always bows the image). Because the horizon is closer here than at sea, so no curvature to be discerned, its beyond the limits of the camera to pick it up.

Re: Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

Pity I didn't have a lampost in the foreground to show up the lens distortion. I'll try harder next time.

Re: Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

Good information markb, but the thing is my horizon is below the middle of the photo, so the lens distortion should be bowing upwards. Anyway, I'm seeking a photo with the same camera where I took a straight line image lijw a table or book shelf or something: if that goes flat across then my case is...

Re: Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

Don't mind a bit of good-natured trolling by folk who may or may not be allowed to drive and vote, but the most bloody annoying thing about this now is that I can't edit the post any more to remove the question mark in my title.

Re: The silliest sign you've seen on a walk?

Not silly - I'm sure it was a great sign in its day - but a little useless in its present position and state. Taken 2021 on the approach to Conival.

Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

10 curvature K.JPG Just a little hobby horse of mine recently, and proving something we 'all' agree on in any case (aghem). Seriously, the flat-earther comments in Facebook 'science'and 'astronomy' sites, makes a person feel they have to take it seriously (I could put it more strfongly than that, n...
