Re: New maps on Walkhighlands

Oh, what a shame. I liked the OS maps, because there's so much detail. The new maps are OK if you're using a GPS and walking WH routes or paths but are not detailed enough if you're wanting to plan an off-piste route that's not on WH, for which you really need OS maps or Harveys. Is this because the...

Re: Deer Ked countermeasures

But the big question is this: were Deer Keds always this bad or have they got worse over the last couple of years? Is there an explosion in numbers and is it related to climate change? They are certainly just as horrible as midges and clegs, though in a different way, but you don't see any informati...

Re: things that have lasted

A smelly Helly Hansen from 1976. I still use it for mountain biking locally. It's indestructible.

Re: Tent or Bivi

A tent every time. Keeps out midges, clegs, rain, wind, snow. Keeps your kit dry. Easier to brew and cook. You will be warmer and more comfortable.

Re: Help a newbie lady with gear/trousers

It depends where you're going and how high. It's generally a lot warmer on the west coast than the east. It's still pretty cold where I live in the Cairngorms. The highest mountains in west and east are still snow-capped and pretty icy, so ice axe and crampons are needed there. Probably you'll need ...

Re: Car Parking Oban

I'd leave it in Tesco if I were you. That's what I always do. The cameras etc. are just a sham - any fines are not legally enforceable under Scottish Law. Or so I was reliably informed by the very friendly Oban traffic warden :D

Re: First highlands May 2022 - Midges, ticks, car rental

Maybe try https://www.rentalcars.com/ ? Not sure how they will compare but often the cheapest.

Re: First highlands May 2022 - Midges, ticks, car rental

Midges shouldn't be too bad in May but good old fashioned DEET will keep them away - I use Jungle formula. Ticks will be out and about in force though. Apply a ring of DEET on your legs above your socks, tuck your trousers into your socks, avoid long vegetation where the ticks hide (bracken, long gr...

Re: Apprehension

Hi Al - what route are you taking in and out of Knoydart? I will arrive at Glenfinnan late Saturday evening, walk to Corryhully bothy and pitch tent nearby. If things go according to plan: Sunday: Climb up Sgurr nan Coireachan and Sgurr Thuilm, follow the NE ridge down to Strathan. Continue NNE ove...

Re: positive mental attitude

It's not too great getting wet, but you can have some truly memorable days in bad weather. All the swirling mist, bits of view bursting out of the cloud and the potential for a big clear up at the end of the day - all very atmospheric and mysterious. The challenge of map and compass navigation is al...

Re: Rain and preventing wet gear

I agree completely with others on here: rucksack covers are almost completely useless at keeping stuff dry and they make a horrible row when it is windy. Anything needing to be kept dry should go in a dry bag inside the rucksack; I'd put a sleeping bag in a plastic bag inside the dry bag to make sur...

Re: The Hill of the Flies the hard way - Craig of Monievreck

Nice report. Hope I'm not putting a dampener on things but I wonder if you checked yourself for tick bites? I was on that same hill last Friday and managed to get bitten by one of the little beasts with Lyme disease; I've got the classic bull's eye rash. I'm now on antibiotics for the next 3 weeks. ...

Re: Lyme Disease/Ticks

Years ago any tick was quite a big character and easy to spot, but for the last three or four years the ticks I have found hitching a ride have been very small. I assume they are the nymph stage. This surprised me a bit as I thought the nymphs attached themselves to small animals. Anyone else seen ...

Re: Strategy for getting good weather, coming up from Englan

"What do you do for accommodation if arriving at midnight - I wouldn't want to be putting up a tent at that time, and I can't imagine many b&bs taking arrivals at such a late hour? Spring, another one I might try." Of course, I forgot about accommodation! I'm in a club, who hav...
