Re: Feedback requested: 3-day route Cairngorms

As others have pointed out, it’s a straightforward ridge from Carn a’ Mhaim to Macdui, although it’s a fair slog up on to the shoulder of Macdui. As a newcomer to Scotland’s wild lands there are 2 useful bits of information you should have : firstly, we have the right to (responsible) access everywh...

Re: love triangle on Toll Creagach

You’ve got the best of the day there….loved your ptarmigan pictures. I never carry a long zoom so I never get shots like this. Even if I did I reckon camera shake would spoil most of them but yours are beautifully sharp!

Re: My First Whiteout Walk

Another enjoyable story. If you look into the Ordnance Survey’s actual survey and mapping techniques though, you’ll conclude that there’s nothing lacking here in terms of navigation needs. Also OS 1;50000 use a 10 m contour interval and the old 1:63360 a 25 foot interval, they’re both more detailed ...

Re: A Fantastic Fannichs Five

And you need to get up here and do the An Teallach ridge, it’s the best thing on the mainland!

Re: A Fantastic Fannichs Five

Great report with great photos, thank you for posting. These 5 took me 3 outings - your first 3 on a sodden August day in 1982- the Sgurr Bhreac in November in trail running shoes and a disturbingly cold coating of ice crystals which gave me frost nip and took 3 toenails, and made me abort the short...

Re: Scarpa Ribelle HD Vs Manto Pro GTX

No experience yet of the Manta but I have the Scarpa before the Ribelle - a grey & blue job of composite construction. Before that I had a pair of Cumbre’s which were fabulous but half a size too small - every Alpine trip I would sacrifice two toe nails. The composite boot was lighter, still a g...

Re: Hill fitness

"Do hills" is good if you live a feasible day trip from one of the mountainous national parks. It is more difficult if like me you live in a part of the country where all ground is below 300 m which makes it impossible to train for the sustained 800+ meter ascents required to gain, for exa...

Re: Hill fitness

Sadly the only way to get hill fit is to climb hills. Doing a bit of running helps a bit but increases the risk of training injury. How mindful are you of pace and stride length when you are on steeper ground? Shortening stride, slowing your pace and focusing on breathing can all help. I once did an...

Re: Beinn a' Chaorainn

Lovely atmospheric pictures. When I climbed this one (and Ben Teallach, just after its promotion to Munro status) it was spring, with much more snow cover, and thick mist. So I could see….hee haw! (Sorry) So your donkey like persistence paid off much better than mine.

Re: Beinn Dearg via the Carn na Feola Terrordome

Looks like a rope and a few bits of gear might have been handy. Well done, that’s one you’ll never forget! Great story and one that’s focused my mind - I had already started thinking about the full traverse for this spring

Re: Technology and do I need to be careful?

I’m a bit of a Luddite and therefore a late adopter but the app (Outdooractive in my case, together with OSLocate)has become my go-to just because it takes up so much less brain space to use, even though the map and the compass are always there in the background. I do worry that I will become deskil...

Re: Fabulous Frosty Fhionnlaidh

I always look forward to your photos. And this set reminds me that Ben Fionnlaidh is almost as good a viewpoint as Beinn Bheithir. Thank you.

Re: A dash around the Grey corries

Great story! I did this exact same route in May 1998, loved the ridge and I think enjoyed exploring the tramway even more. I’d love to go back but I believe a lot of the timber bridges have now gone.

Re: First munro bagging failure

Not a failure, a tactical retreat and very sensible too. The hill will still be there next time, the priority is to make sure you are too. It’s always a hard decision to press “escape” but well done for making the safe call.
