Re: How difficult or not is Ben Wyvis?

My local Munro so done a few times. 1st time alone, of the back of winter, some snow up top but nothing that blocked the route, icy cold. 2nd time in summer with friends, nice warm day, nice walk. 3rd time with my son who was 4 at the time. He got up himself with my only aid being to keep between hi...

Re: When can you claim the Munro

Unless you start from the equator it does not count.

Re: Anyone recognise this gear?

Glass bottles and tin cans (infact almost everything) suggests someone not well clued up or well prepared for their trip but what is the deal wi the selfies. The post is a bit "look at me, haven't I done good". I really hope someone not very clued up on the hills has not tried to return to...

Re: Best munros for baby carriers.

I would not take anyone that is not capable of walking themselves and following basic instructions. I took my Son up Ben Wyvis when he was 3. He had his own whistle, water and food. I did not carry or aid him once. His instructions where if anything happened to me to sit somewhere safe and blow this...

Re: When do you count a Munro?

Here's my spicy, random hot-take: to claim you have bagged a Munro you have to do at least 914.4 meters of ascent. Think about this, if you climb Ben Vane but start at 10 meters above sea level, you've only climbed a Graham's worth of it , not the entire thing. I'm not saying you have to start at s...

Re: Repairing a thermarest sleeping mat

Would gorilla tape over the repair patch do the job? It sticks pretty well, I carry it in my day back. if its no good I would submerge in water for a while to remove it so you don't make the hole bigger.

Re: deer flies - keds

I had these all over me when I did the walk out of the Eastern Fannichs round. I found rather than trying to ping or lift them of the best method was to roll them in a circular motion and flick hard using my palm...down, round and away, kind of in a "U" shape. worked a treat.

Re: Camping cookware recommendations?

Perhaps everyone else has less conflagrational cooking fires; we melted a heap of aluminium beer cans in this one, in the morning there was a big lump of aluminium which had poured out and set hard under the grate... I have to agree with this, having not got work tomorrow ive been sat out in thevga...

Re: Arthritis and Munros

I got diagnosed at 27 and by the time i took up the hills a few years ago it had affected both my feet, both my knees, my chest and left hand. Poles make a huge difference for me. I get out all months and conditions of the year and apart from being a bit slower than most i can manage the big outings...

Re: Anything ever go bump in the night on your bothy trips?

The night before going up Maol Cheann-Dearg my pal and I stopped off at the Coire Fionnaraic bothy. It had been cold, misty and with the odd snow flurry. After crossing the bridge before the bothy I remember a feeling of being followed and a presence passing me by eventually, something passing with ...

Re: Can I 'claim it' dilemma?!

Depends on if you consider reaching the summit completed or not. I personally could not claim it. When I do multi Munro summits I get paranoid enough at the end of the day that I maybe forgot to get right to the summit of ones I did at the start  I would have to go back and do it again before I...

Re: Strathfarrar

Does anyone know if there are time restrictions accessing the glen for Mountaineering Scotland members during Feb/March. I know the gates don't open to non members before April so was thinking of renewing for this. I like an early start and a 6/7am start would suit me but don't want the hassle of ge...

Re: Cheap stuff in Lidls.

Shall take a look later.

On a side note is every Lidls laid out so that the only way to get out without buying anything is to squeeze passed the queue in the narrow gap of the only open checkout.
