Five Sub-2000s near Elgin

Three Courses of sub-2000s near Elgin Several weeks ago Jaywizz had suggested a weekend collecting sub-2000s around Elgin. With less than a week to go the Met Office forecast was not boding well. As the chosen weekend approached, however, the predictions appeared better, so with overtrousers, jacke...

Re: First Aid Kit required

In 2019 I parked on the bridge on the south side of the road as recommended by Inca so it would not impair visibility for farm traffic. There was a notice as mentioned by Inca on the railing on the opposite side about not parking on that side. I didn't get a note. And there are no suitable laybys. T...

Rotating photos

Starting in (I think) September 2019 I noticed that photos I'd taken as portrait and then rotated in software to landscape were rotated back again when posted into a WH report. :o I solved that with a workaround, moaned a bit, and just accepted it. I now see that all my old reports posted prior to t...

Kirkliston - Local Lockdown Walks

This is a record of all the local walks I did during between 29th March and 8th July 2020. This fifteen week stretch is approximately the period of Lockdown which started on 23rd March and ended on 3rd July when the 5 mile limit in Scotland ended and we were free to travel further afield. Despite li...

Colt Hill and a couple of Arches

This year's objective was to tick off the remaining mainland Marilyns south of the Highland Boundary Fault. With five of eight done by March, covid-19 threw a four month delay into the schedule and it was the end of August before I was down to the final summit. I was keen to take advantage of even a...

Cairnharrow and the Cairnholy tombs

Cairnharrow route s.gif I wasn't going to make this public, but Cairnharrow has very few reports and I saw that Fife Flyer's has now lost its photographs. I thought it worth sharing it for the parking if nothing else, since for many hills finding a suitable start point is the main difficulty. P1040...

Fell of Fleet - with a bang!

It was a dreich day as I drove south from Edinburgh in search of the better weather predicted by the Met Office for Galloway. That part did turn out well and I found a fine sunny day with only light breezes. Most of the rest didn't go quite to plan. The first delay was finding the A702 closed at Elv...

Drumcroy Hill

For my first 'new' Marilyn since February, Jaywizz invited me to join her at the telephone box in Trinafour to tackle Drumcroy Hill. A little research found two popular routes, one from said telephone box and the other from the minor road about 1km further south. That appeared on Streetview to have ...

Re: Good idea - BUT

Well done on finding an even less inviting way up Cairnsmore that me! I too thought it would be an easy wander after Craignell and instead found myself taking far longer than I'd expected, but at least I managed to avoid your trees. Perhaps they did you a favour because after the trees I found the h...

Scald Law before the ban!

Scald Law route s.jpg After watching a government spokesman on the TV telling me it was okay to drive a short distance to take my daily exercise I did just that, Twenty five minutes later parked with three other vehicles at a layby on the A702 I started up the path to Scald Law. I met one walker on...

Dumyat with a shower

A reasonable forecast and lack of hills for several months saw Jaywizz encouraging me out to the nearby Dumyat. Certainly much nearer than the Galloway hills that are top of my to-do list. Last time I'd climbed Dumyati from the car park at Blairlogie while Jaywizz had planned the less vertical appro...

Sun and snow on the Kips

After what seemed like weeks of rain, Thursday dawned frosty but, as forecast, by late morning bright sunshine tempted me out to the Pentlands only a half hour drive away. The Kips route s.gif I started from Threipmuir car park with the intention of heading up Hare Hill to revisit the memorial at th...

Bengairn and Bengray

The forecast for the weekend and later was looking dire. In comparison Wednesday looked almost dry with gentle breezes so an early start was planned to squeeze another two Galloway Marilyns into the lengthening day, but fate had other plans. At 7:30am I expected the slow start in the morning rush ho...

Re: Mountain Rescue in Scotland

You can add Tayside MRT to the other three.. The four are collectively iSMR (independent Scottish Mountain Rescue). There is no difference in what they do on the ground, but as you are discovering it does lead to difficulties if you want to easily talk to all of Scotland's 28 volunteer rescue teams....

A popular day in the Kilpatrick Hills

A good forecast on the Saturday demanded that I go walking on the Sunday. After contemplating the two and a half hour drive to a Marilyn or two west of Dumfries, I decided instead on a later start and shorter drive to Duncolm, a Marilyn just north of the Erskine Bridge. I reached there at about 10am...
