Re: Smartwatch

I bought a refurbished Garmin Fenix 5s from Amazon. Half the full price it works very well. Battery lasts around a week in general use. It has maps and the usual features, HRM, barometer, tracking. Links to my phone and has its own app Garmin Connect. I’m not sure I can justify the spend on an Apple...

Re: GPS General Query

I have had a Satmap gps unit for a few years but it’s clunky to use by comparison with OS Maps on my phone. Generally speaking I download routes to my Satmap but I use my phone most of the time since it’s already on for other reasons. Satmap works as a back up that gives me additional security if my...

Re: Gaick pass and Leathad an Taobhain

Some years ago I cycled (with a group of friends) the minigaig excluding the push up the steep path to the higher level. Near where it joins Tromie we cycled and pushed over heather and a relatively firm surface towards a shooting track above feshie. We stayed at the independent hostel there then cy...

Re: Ideal pack size and weight for weekend backpack?

I’m going walking for 2 nights with a dog. It’s a bit cooler but dry over next few days. I’m using an Exos48. Down bag, sleep mat, dog’s Downie and fleecy mat. Food for 2 days and extra socks and merino underpants. Lightweight Patagonia synthetic jacket. Rain jacket. Tent and footprint - Nordisk Tel...

Re: Cork Handles,( apologies to mr Barker & Corbett).

The only cork handles as spares that I have come across are from Leki. Not sure what the dimensions of the tube under your current handles is but you might have some luck here https://www.leki.co.uk/spare-parts-c197/leki-m14/grips-handles-t124 The other possibility is to adapt cork fishing rod handl...

Re: "ABC" Watches

I recently bought a Fenix 5 on sale. A lot less than RSP. Sportpursuit.com have one advertised but you need to register with the site before you can view. Worth the money if you can stretch above your budget https://www.sportpursuit.com/catalog/product/view/id/2088190 I bought a Garmin reconditioned...

Re: The winter of discount tents

I have a Force Ten Xenon that I got at a shade over £200 last year around this time. Roomy and light while giving me room for dogs too. Unfortunately my quick look hasn’t found it much cheaper than £250.

Re: Tent for Solo Backpacking - 2.2kg too heavy?

I have a Coleman Cobra which weighs around 2.2kg and it’s fine. For a sub £100 tent it was a good start. I need a 2 man fir a dog to join me. I’ve just recently invested in a F10 Xenon U/L at a reasonable price from Summits in Paisley (an eBay seller too). The weight saving is good news since my Ber...

Re: the C word

One of the Mountain Rescue teams on twitter was advising to stay at home. It’s not a reflection on our competence or fitness. The Emergency Services look like they are going to be under the cosh. Anyone on the islands needing assisted ventilation will need to be flown to a mainland hospital. This is...

Re: the C word

This is a picture of a hall on Barra posted by Angus MacNeill the local mp. This is what people are preparing for and it’s why they are asking folk not to travel. Why would the authorities be setting up such schemes if they don’t expect difficulties. The nearest hospital on the islands is in Inverne...

Re: the C word

I love ‘end of’. It says much about the quality of thought by the user don’t you think? It usually highlights a disregard for factual input in my opinion. But thanks ‘end of’. I’m glad she runs the Scottish government. She’s far from perfect and there are, indeed, areas that could be addressed bette...

Re: the C word

Not sure I get the joke? Who would you replace her with? There isn’t a U.K. based politician gets any rating north of the birder. Boris is, rightly in my opinion, not worthy of much respect. And devolution means that pretty much everything he says doesn’t apply here. SNP polling at 50% and above and...
