Re: Ladhar Bhienn from Inverie

There's a shorter but little-used alternative I found by chance a few years ago. Start clockwise by the tracks as far as the Folach ruin, but instead of heading up the (rather tedious) slope above, continue up the glen on the excellent stalkers' path (a magnificent piece of Victorian manual engineer...

Re: Bagging Munros During CWT

Question 2a Yes,no problem. Ive done this (and the other two as well) carrying full camping gear (never liked bothies) and food, and I wouldn't describe myself (even at the time) as remarkably fit. The top bit of Ciche is 'interesting', as they say, but not really technical.

Re: Via ferrata: my journey to the dark side!

I've found that by far the most satisfying VFs are those encountered in the course of a longer route, rather than freestanding ones cllimbed for their own sake. I'm particularly thinking of those on the Alta Via high-level routes across the Dolomites: where they're sometimes optional variants on the...

Re: Car park closures Glencoe

VED in fact covers the majority of spending on roads. National and local road expenditure in 2021/22 was £11.8 Bn. VED forecast to raise £8Bn next year. So VEd covers around 2/3rds of roads cost. https://www.racfoundation.org/motoring-faqs/economics#a19 https://obr.uk/forecasts-in-depth/tax-by-tax-...

Quite so. The tragedy of the commons nicely exemplified.

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

"Every additional motor vehicle parked is a further degradation of the Highland landscape." Really. Are they any worse than the moving ones g8st on the road. If there is a road there in the first place then that is the major degradation. A few sq yards of gravel at the roadside to park is...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

We never needed this in the highlands before and it is a massive lack of vision to see it as the answer now! Given the status quo, that may well be true. But what of the future? Let's say that numbers of hillgoers continue to increase at the rate they have done over the last quarter century, what t...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

I wouldn't include the French Alps and Pyrenees in my recommendations for other examples to learn from, except negatively - public transport in the French mountains is generally dire, and tourism is car-dominated. I'd look instead at, for instance the Sud Tirol/Alto Adige, both the Dolomites and the...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

There's a lot to learn from the way the (private motor vehicle: parking: public transport: landscape degradation: tourist tax) equations are managed in mountain areas elsewhere in Europe, such as, for instance, the South Tyrol and Switzerland. I’m a regular Swiss alps visitor and parking charges ar...

Re: Dartmoor camping ban overturned on appeak

Announced today that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case (date not yet fixed). The general expectation was, I think, that the Supremes wouldn't accept the Darwalls' plea for a further hearing. This saga isn't over yet.

Re: Asking for trouble

and if you're not fit enough to cycle to Culra without one, you're not fit enough to be safe on the hills. Your other points aside - given that e-bikes are being used to extend the hill lives of those with decades of experience behind them, but who no longer have the legs for the long routes, that ...

Re: Asking for trouble

Hope this link works, it’s quite an old article but remember it well. I’m one off the “thrill seekers” mentioned.I indirectly know some of the others as well all of whom are/were well aware of the conduct needed for bike access on the hills. His rant starts on page 18 and then continues. https://ar...

Re: Asking for trouble

I'd suggest the OP writes to the editor of Cycle (the CUK magazine) and/or posts on the CUK forum. Both are independently edited/moderated, and frequently carry items in one way or another critical of CUK. If posting to the Forum, I'd advise posting in the 'Touring and Expedition' rather than the 'O...
