Re: Newbie with sore legs and feet

Do you use poles?

If you do, you'll know the benefits. If not, give them a try. Using them spreads the workload on the ascent and shares the load of the impact on the descent. I find my legs are significantly less fatigued after using poles than they would be if I hadn't.

Re: Correct ascent figure ?

Total ascent number. It gives a better indication as to what the walk was like, how difficult it may have been, and how long it might take someone to do the same walk given their own fitness and capabilities. Particularly if your walk included at least two tops - a really high ascent number suggests...

Re: Ben Lomond - advice on nearby campsites request

Ah great, well done! In my haste to reply this morning I hadn't realised it was this weekend you meant, so you would already have been. We just missed you then, we left on Friday. Rowardennan's car park was busy on Thursday, but no sign of any dodgy parking along the road. I'm glad folk are getting ...

Re: Ben Lomond - advice on nearby campsites request

Hi Manwaeadug, I just did this a few days ago! Definitely recommend Sallochy, yes you can pretty much park next to your pitch, or just across from it, if you chose one of the central area pitches or Loch Side 1 or 2. We were there for 2 days and my wife doesn't join me on the hikes, neither does my ...

Re: Seventy (!!) parking fines issued at Loch Lomond

The parking area at Eas Urchaidh in Glen Orchy had several campervans badly parked when we were there at the weekend. One in particular was parked in the middle of a bay that would easily have taken two vehicles. We bumped into (not literally, we observed appropriate social distancing measures) ano...

Re: Litter on the hills

Criffel car park was full to capacity almost all day today, 14/15/16 cars in at any one time, all considerately parked though with plenty of space to manoeuvre. I went down for my daily litter pick tonight expecting the worst, but found nothing! For the first time since we reopened the car park, it ...

Re: Where will you be going?

Extra few days (at least) of 5 mile limitations for me thanks to the Annan/Gretna outbreak so I'll just be up Criffel, again. When we get the all clear down here I'll still be staying close so it'll be Moffat, the Lowthers and Galloway hills until it settles down. Given how busy its been here at Cri...

Re: Litter on the hills

I go and clear the Criffel car park every night. I just use dog poo bags because I don't have far to carry the litter seeing as there's two wheelie bins between the car park and the gate at the start/end of the walk. You can't miss them. That's right, two wheelie bins right there and still folk leav...

Re: New Coronavirus Law

From my admittedly very localised evidence... if you want to avoid people dont go out on a Saturday. Criffel is 9 miles from Dumfries, so outwith the 5 mile guidance, but reasonable enough if hillwalking is your chosen form of exercise - I've not noticed any police down here since the "Phase 1&...

Re: New Coronavirus Law

- I was on my own - No crowds or busy carparks - For the few people that were still around, we all observed social distancing - Hand sanitiser used before & after using gates - I chose a hill I've been up several times - As always I left no trace of my stay. You have obviously done everything a...

Criffel's Back Passage, with a surprise

This walk report (my first, hello!) takes you along a much less well trodden track than the well known routes up Criffel, and was the result of me wanting to get some exploring done whilst staying close to home. Let's begin with the Covid disclaimer though. I'm one of the lucky ones, I live at the b...

A belated hello from Scotland's South

Hi everyone, it's about time I said that! I'm John, and I work in music, hence the username. I'm a long term lover of wandering around in the wilderness and signed up to this site 4 years ago to start logging my adventures and take advantage of some of the walk reports and route maps. Unfortunately ...
