TGO2022 Kilchoan to Montrose, on one hill a day

Hi All, Midwinter, time to get the maps out. Then I discovered I hadn't added any of the hills I bagged during my crossing of Scotland in 2022, as a participant in The Great Outdoors Challenge. So, some homework to do. To keep it very short, I found there's two sides to the TGO. One is the preparati...

Re: High camps, low streams: Mull, Morvern, Mamores (11 days

Good to see you back on the site - and with some wander to announce your return! Notwithstanding "modern gear" you must have been lugging a fair-sized pack around, if not 80 pounds! A great read, and some superb photos. Do you have a fancy camera, or do you just use your mobile phone in g...

Re: Beinn Bhuidhe, the urbex way

Oh, I like the photo's very much, you've captured the aesthetics very well! But hey, what could we expect, you're half titanium :)

High camps, low streams: Mull, Morvern, Mamores (11 days)

maps: further down; gear: last paragraph Just lovely My spirits were heightened by misty Oban harbor. Nothing epitomises getting away better than the sight of a Calmac ferry, engines running. When I arrived on the Isle of Mull, at Craignure pier, the bus driver said: ‘I’ll give you a free ride’. Non...

Re: Navigation watch, app or...?

I use an iPhone for navigation, with paper prints of ridges and difficult areas as a backup. The app I use is Viewranger, (recently swallowed by Outdooractive). I draw my routes and variations (safer, shorter) on the digital maps, alos when in the field. In practice, even in bad weather, I rely on t...

Re: Is April a good time to hike to the very North of Scotla

Hi, April or even March is a great time to walk the Northwest. My last 7 multi day treks were March or early April and my reports give a good idea of the weather. Frosty mornings are the best! Most hill-baggers avoid bad weather and drive up when the weather's fine. On a longer trek you cannot avoid...

Re: TGO Challenge 2021

I'm in too, and quite excited. I didn't think I'd stand a chance with deferrers and so many 'regulars'. It's my first TGO but it is my twentieth long trek in Scotland since I first came to the Highlands in 1990 (in jeans, of course  ). My starting point is Oban, it's the only place I can reach ...

Re: Return to the Highlands; a week dodging the weather

Excellent report, showing some cunning ways to work around the weather.
Especially the coastal bothy trip is a splendid idea. Safe, but still wild, judging by the photos.

Re: Am Bàthach from Rannoch (9 snowy days)

I wonder if you will return so early in the year next year? Out of interest do you make notes each day? Your routes are so descriptive and you make it sound like so much fun. One of the benefits of digital navigation: check position, take a pic. Hence the photos of ‘grotty conditions’. Next year mi...
