Re: Ring of Steall (scrambling via NE ridge of Sgurr a'Mhaim

My son and I attempted the Ring mid August and took the clockwise route. We started to run out of water on what was a very hot day so bailed out after just two of the four Munro's https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=98961 Reflecting on our trip when we got home I did start ...

No 60 in glorious sunshine

A couple of years back I'd set out to do Beinn Dubhchraig and Ben Oss in deep snow. However, I hurt my hip / groin so after reaching the summit of Dubhchraig I headed back to the car. So there was some unfinished business to do on these hills and it was nice to return in very different weather condi...

Stob Ghanhar & Stob a'Choire Odhair

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50286245791_464c93efe8_b.jpg I’d been looking forward to doing these two hills for a while and Stob Ghabhar did not disappoint. It was great to get off the busy A82 onto the single-track road toward Inveroran. Victoria Bridge car park was already full by the time...

Half a ring of burning hot metal

Having set off from Glasgow at 7am we arrived at a sun baked Nevis Gorge Car park at 10am. The midges decided to eat us for breakfast. Midges were going to be an issue all day as there was hardly a breath of wind. The lack of wind contributed to the oppressive heat and with no shade the sun was brut...

Re: An un-Munro like Munro

ScotFinn65 - Thanks for the comment. We chopped 7km off the route by me getting miles and Km mixed up. It was a 12 mile walk, so 19km :D
I'll change the report to reflect this.

Re: New path after the railway bridge

To avoid the blog I did this in winter conditions when the bog was frozen.
Had to bail on Ben Oss so need to return some day to complete these two.
Good to know that there is now a new bridge.
Thanks for the helpful up-date.

An un-Munro like Munro

I'd originally planned a walk near Bridge of Orchy, but looking at the weather forecast the prospect of a cloud free summit was slim, so we decided to head further East. The choice of where to go was mainly determined by what maps I had on my bookshelf. Having previously done the hills on the Wester...

When is a gate not a gate?

Glasgow Fair Monday is the weather looked ok, so four of us headed to Crianlarich to head up An Caisteal and Beinn a'Chron. After stopping for a coffee at The Drovers Inn we parked up in the lay-by just south of Crianlarich and booted up to head up the hill. There quite a new looking small gate with...

Carn Mairg Curcuit

This was my first time back on the hills post COVID19 lockdown, so hill-fitness was just not there. The walk to the first summit was pleasant enough, but lack of fitness was really apparent on some of the steeper downhill sections. Mind you, we only got rained on once for about 10 mins, and while th...

Re: Scunnered in the Arrochar Alps

Running out of water is a pain. I took 3.5L with me on Sunday just in case! I've also started to carry at least one isotonic energy gel. They taste horrible but are small and light to carry and can help stop cramping up and give a good wee energy boost.

Banishing ghosts from the past

I was visiting relatives in Oban and the weather forecast for Sunday was so good I just have to get out on the hills. Fort William and Ben Nevis via the CMD Arete had been on my to do on a clear day list for a while, so I got up at silly O'clock and headed for the Ben. I've been to Fort William many...

Re: How do I get down from here?

Lovely stuff :D Your photos are great - you're right though, they often don't do a location justice! A day to remember for a very long time. It's a fabulous walk. You had a lovely day for it too - the views are spectacular from that ridge. The summit wasn't clear when I was there many years ago, bu...

Re: How do I get down from here?

This is a very informative post, thank you! I will head on the Bidean nam Bian this Sunday. First time in Scotland! I will be with a fit but inexperienced hiker. Looking at the pictures, I am a bit discouraged though. Is it safe to do this walk without an axe and crampons? I have been considering a...
