Re: Storr

Great report, not sure why it's on public view. If it's warning us that it is windy and rainy on Skye - thanks. Looking out the window - it's windy and not raining just now but I can't see the top of the Storr for low cloud. Typical August, the misty month, on Skye, the others are just wet and wind...

Re: Golden Eagle on Mull

KatTai wrote:I don't want to disappoint you but looking at the colouring on the underside of the wings and the small beak I think that may be a buzzard.

Inclined to agree with that, initial reaction on seeing the picture was that the proportions didn't look right for an eagle.

Re: Invercauld car park - ok to stay overnight?

Having looked at the estate's website http://www.invercauld.estate/walks-climbs/index.html I get the impression that using their car park to camp would not be an option.

Re: Wild camping spots on Harris and Lewis?

There isn't much woodland in Harris and Lewis and what there is tends to be plantations rather than natural woodland.

The access code does not grant the right to take firewood from natural woodlands or plantations, taking firewood without permission of the landowner is theft.

Re: Walking / Hiking in Wales

If you want to avoid the crowds you could go up the Carneddau from Aber Falls. The hills north of the Carneddau are really nice. There are the Moelwyns which can be done from Croesor. A bit further south are the Rhinogs and Y Llethr. If you are interested in archeology Yr Eifl is worth a look with t...

Re: Glen Doll update May 2022

Does anyone who works for these places actually read the rules on access. Unless someone is actively carrying out work they are not closed. Same with every other route route where storm damage has occurred. Not for others to decide on what is dangerous for individuals where the danger is naturally ...

Re: Packable camp / bothy shoes

How about something like aqua shoes. They come in all sorts of designs including some very soft ones that look as if they wouldn't take up much space or weigh very much. Have a look to see what Decathlon have. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/aquashoes-for-adults-aquashoes-100/_/R-p-102440?mc=8330684&a...

Re: Washed my new Softshell with bio detergent. Is that bad?

Bio detergents contain enzymes that break down things like proteins, fats and other large organic molecules into smaller ones so they get washed out of the fabric. Some DWR finishes use waxes or similar compounds to create the waterproofing. It is likely that the enzymes may also breakdown the chemi...

Re: Calkin Rig - go now, more forestry planned

Not sure, Skyelines. I got the impression (from the local gentleman who stopped to chat) that it would affect the south side of the Boykin Burn, maybe slopes of Calkin Rig and Shaw Hill. He definitely said that access along the track would be restricted (closed?) once planting started. That was the...

Re: Snowdon, Easter weekend

Alternative route up Snowdon which may be less frequented is from Rhyd Ddu. Take the path to Bwlch Cwm LLan and up the south ridge.and descend via the Snowdon Ranger path. Pen Yr Ole Wen and Carneddau will be less busy I guess. Pen Yr Ole Wen from Llyn Ogwen is a steep slog, nice when you get to the...

Re: Survey on the environmental impact of slow travel

It might help if you explained what slow travel is. Having looked at the survey it seems part of the point is not to explain it. If I may be so bold, I think this survey is not well-designed. It asks us to give a freeform description of what we understand by the term 'slow travel' but then asks us ...
