Re: Buff Up Your Helmets!

And there was me thinking that you wore a hat like the one in your picture  I wear that underneath. For a helmet I use an Austro-Hungarian Pikelhelm looted from a dead guy on the Somme in 1917. Or a Scottish Burgeonet looted from a dead guy in a borders raid near Hawick in 1597... Or a German ...

Re: Hello

Welcome aboard! There’s a school of thought that there’s no such thing as winter hillwalking in Scotland, only winter mountaineering, that’s to do with the weather, the snow conditions, the visibilty and the avalanche risk. Ben Nevis is not a hill to learn winter mountaineering on, if you fancy bei...

Re: SNOW!

Brace yourselves for a flurry of horrible, tragic and avoidable accidents in the news as swarms of over-enthusiastic, under- experienced, would-be mountaineers throw themselves like lemmings from the hills... Or am I just being cynical...?

Re: Glenbeg Bothy

Where is this Glen Beg Bothy? Last I heard one building had burned down, but the stone building was ok, but that was a while ago. It is in Gleann Beag and is located about 3 miles (as the crow flies) ENE of Beinn Dearg and the same distance SE of Seana Bhraigh. It is a long way from any road access...

Re: Dried food

Dehydrated potato (like Smash, non-brand from Lidl are very cheap) you can make this stodge taste better by adding some mustard and /or dehydrated onion. Dried mixed vegetables are available in many supermarkets - look in the sauces and ingredients aisle. Oxo cubes make a nice gravy for these vegeta...

Re: Winter cooking stove

A meths stove is more adaptable, makes less waste - i.e. gas cannisters - and is less bulky. Meths burns ok in cold weather. You can make one from a Trangia burner which you can put inside a hexiblock stove with the bottom cut out. Or find one online, or in a junk shop. I am very proud of my wee sto...

Re: Bothy Bagging around Rannoch Moor

May is usually a fine time of year to do such an expedition; fine weather (sometimes!), longer daylight and lack of midgies (usually!). Maybe some snow left gleaming on the distant peaks...

Re: Winter visitor

I love to see the whooper swans, Gavin Maxwell in Ring of Bright Water gave a beautiful description of them. There was a loch on the Isle of Skye where I often saw them, they used to over-winter there, then flew off North again in Spring.
