Re: Toxic Shellfish
I don’t personally see a lot of information on this - sure there used to be signs up round the east coast but that could be a false memory. Local newspapers such as the West Highland Free Press, Stornoway Gazette, Oban Times, etc. carry warnings, also warnings are displayed in the windows of local ...

Re: Toxic Shellfish
And for anyone who thinks they’ll be brave and risk getting the runs: When humans consume shellfish containing biotoxins, it can lead to three different types of poisoning: amnesic (short-term memory loss), paralytic (affects nervous system), and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (gastrointestinal). I...

Re: Thunder and Lightning very very frightning
I knew a bloke who was a gamekeeper; he was hiking up a hill in the Cairngorms when he was struck by lightning, perhaps attracted by his .303 lightning conductor on his shoulder. He staggered around a bit, straightened himself up, and carried on. He was struck again, and decided to call it a day. I ...

Re: How to get to Ben A'an from Glasgow without a car?
I used to hitch a lot before I got a car, so I like to pay a bit back. Usually you get folk who are a good laugh, others just smell strongly. One weirdo seemed nice at first but soon got onto the subject of how the FBI, CIA, MI5 and KGB were all after him because of his secret knowledge... And whic...

Re: Need advice
You can't expect kids to live in a tent all winter. They'll die. You sound like someone without a grasp on reality. Try explaining your situation to social services, they may be able to get accommodation for you.

Re: How to get to Ben A'an from Glasgow without a car?
Takes me back a bit .............................................. Hitching was used to get further North on a lift to Glasgow and on train to Balloch and hitching from there. Club buses from the city too. Yes. I've stood in that layby at the roundabout up from Balloch. I was down in Wales climbing...

Re: How to get to Ben A'an from Glasgow without a car?
Come to think of it, clinging to floating debris in order to traverse the lochs may just work, as long as the wind changes by 90 degrees once you are up at Loch Achray. You may have to consult a shaman. There is one near Balquidder. Jet Skis on Lomond may be a problem.

Re: How to get to Ben A'an from Glasgow without a car?
You could hitch hike. I mean, I wouldn't pick you up but someone might... Or try cycling. A challenging route might be to get the train to Balloch on Loch Lomond. Get a boat trip up the loch to Inversnaid. Hike over the hill to Loch Katrine at Stronachlachar. Get another boat along Loch Katrine to T...

Oh now it says on the facebook page that the business shut down because of covid. I don't know if anyone else has started doing these trips. Anybody?

Re: Ailsa Craig
Yeh, this. https://www.ballantrae.org.uk/places-to-visit/listing/ailsa-craig-boat-trips-girvan/ I went a few years ago, lots of time to hike up to the top and take loads of photos, explore around the place, have a picnic. I should have taken a fishing rod, folk on a boat were close to the beach, cat...

Re: hi all!
October is a good choice. The midgies will likely have died off but clear autumnal days have plenty of sunshine. Listen out for stags bellowing and roaring on the hillsides.
