If I Only Knew Where It Hurts, Bidean nam Bian

Standing by Loch Achtriochtan IMG-0804.jpg So beautiful that it hurts… And why does it hurt? Because it is only for a day… And where does it hurt? … I ran by Loch Achtriochtan and in the morning light, with the Pass of Glencoe as background, it was almost too beautiful to comprehend. A father and h...

A Geological Study, An Caisteal and Beinn a'Chroin

IMG-0783-1.jpg It fascinates me when stones and rocks take on an almost organic form with wavelike motional structures, like some that you’ll find up on An Caisteal and Beinn a'Chroin. It is so easy to believe that a mountain is something that is fixed, stable, and never changing, but this is a lie...

Between The Peaks on The Breariach Traverse

intro.jpg Devil's Point in the distance I opened the two doors to the Corrour bothy and entered the room that was pretty much empty except from some chairs, a fireplace, some cloths on the floor as beds, and a girl preparing her food. We started to talk and I got the impression that she didn’t real...

Re: Travel Notes and Some Pictures, Chamonix - Mont Blanc

Some nice photos. More a prose-poem than a report, I guess, but interesting. Was it the TMB you were doing? It is like being swept away by a great force that has its origin from both within and without. I think I’m talking about some type of primal Will that makes us act and do things... Very Schop...

Travel Notes and Some Pictures, Chamonix - Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc from Lac Noir cairn.jpg The great dreams (the adventures) are always in the elusive distance, and to reach for them is only to get lost. For the wanderer, only what is clear in sight matters. He only follows tiny piles of shattered rocks along the way. These are the cairns, built by help...

Summer Days, Stob Ghabhar & Stob a'Choire Odhair

IMG-0605-1.jpg Not that the car roads aren’t useful, but what a difference it makes entering a valley that lacks traffic. Where the only noise is of rivers and wind, there is also a fair chance to escape the noise of stressful thoughts, and to relax. As I reached the height of Mam Carraigh walking ...

A Wolf On The Hills, Cruach Ardrain and Beinn Tulaichean

wolf.jpg I woke up early and my tent, located just off the road about 300 meters up the Grey Height, was surrounded by a swarm of midges, finding me as a desirable target. I rushed to put on my running gear and hurried to pack my smaller bag with food and drinks while avoiding getting bitten. I too...

The Honest One, Stob Dearg and Buachaille Etive Mor

sma.jpg The sun was about to set in the west, as I inhaled the warm summer air filled with smells of the highlands. The cold pint of beer in my hand was a reward for another week of work well done, and I felt at peace with myself as I was drinking equally thirsty of the day’s last sunshine, as of t...

Remembering the Firelands, Ben More and Stob Binnein

IMG_0522.jpg I examined the pedals of the white angel begonia carefully, and I found them sparkling in the sun. I had seen this wonder before – reflections of sunshine centred to perfection before my eyes, and I remembered it. I remembered it from the path between the abundant Munro Ben More and it...

Baby Come Run With Me, Beinn Bhuide

The soft breeze over Loch Fyne carries remnants of the greater ocean, and my soft footsteps on the road carries me. The sun is warm and behind me as I run past the shallow waters of the loch. The moon must have drawn the water back to the ocean; the moon must have stolen it. So I run, pass the bridg...

The Great Plan and The Tenth Munro

When I have a detailed plan it is probably considered by others to be merely broad strokes with a brush, but I don’t seem to change. I do my best thou… I spend a lot of time studying the map planning on how to do 4 Munros, and make my way from Tyndrum to Dalmally in a two days walk. In particular I ...

Re: To Ben Lui from Ben Oss?

I've done the route between those hills twice, once in each direction. Although jmarkb is correct in that there isn't an obvious path, I was very pleasantly surprised that there was something of a route to follow almost all of the way. Obviously with snow lying that will be undercover though ...
