Re: Snow on Ben Chonzie

Nothing boring about this mountain, try the summit plateau in a howling 70-80 mph gale, with snow and temperature down to about minus 10!!

Re: Carn na Caim & A' Bhuidheanach

Hi,

Was up on Carn na Caim today (Friday 21st), no point in any photos, visibility down to from 0 to 20 m, howling gales, snowing. Great walk if you are training for a South Pole trek!!

Re: Scarpa Manta's (DEFINATELY NOT FOR ME)

For those of you who get blisters, have you tried using Superfeet insoles. They worked for me. I also use Mountain Thorlo socks. Have not had a blister sicne I used thissi combination almost 8 years ago. I have always had Manta's and I do have broad feet.

Re: Rab Latok Vs Paramo Cascada Troosers

Good choice, I have had their trousers for over 10 years. Have just been out on the hills today, 50mph wind, driving snow, they worked as always.

If you tear them just sew them , they will still work.

Ben Ledi, Stank Glen path

Hi,

Just a quick note, the path through the 2nd forest section coming up the Stank Glen path has been obliterated by about 30 large fallen trees at the mid way point through this forest section. There is a vague workaround but be prepared to climb over various trees!

Re: Eejit

Ben Ledi is my local hill, it needs to be treated with more respect, very tricky on top if the visibility drops to zero in snow.

At least the person rescued is alive and well and I doubt will be up any hill in the future without gear amd map/compass.

Re: Walkhighlands gear review: Gloves

Hi, I have tried all sorts over the last 2 decades walking! Last year decided to switch to Buffalo Mitts , would not be without them now. Even if they get wet they still work well but I do have a second pair in my sack just in case. My hands do not sweat in them as they always have done in all other...

Re: Waterproofing a jacket

Hi, I use the Spray-on Nikway TX-Direct. Wash the jacket in their Tech-Wash then spray on the Tx-Direct then tumble dry. If you cannot tumble dry then not sure if it will work. Alternative is to but the Tx-Direct wash in version and wash the garment again the tumble-dry. I find the spray on method i...

Re: Gaiters

Hi, I have used Paramo for about 10 years, the bottom straps do wear out but my supplier provides free replacements. I find that the mechanism to tighten at the top is not very good. I bought a pair of Crocodile gaiters last year. They are not cheap. I now use them for more severe conditions, they a...

Re: Dressing in layers

Hi, I use 1 layer, Buffalo. Works like a dream, can get a little warm sometimes but nothing else required. You have to be 'brave' to just wear it on its own but it really does work. Even works in the rain so long as you keep moving so you should have some standard gear in your rucksack in case of ac...

A'Mharconaich

Hi all, Just spent a few hours (would normally take no more than 4 hours) getting up A'Mharconaich near Dalwhinnie. Snow conditions a nightmare after the snow of the last 2 days. For those of you who know the route which goes along the 'road' up the valley, the drifts ranged from a few inches deep t...

Re: Beauly - Denny

Government playing politics, election coming up so trying to give the folk living near the line in Stirling false hope.

Whole line should be under the Irish Sea, destruction of the Scottish landscape

Re: Do You Carry Water?

always fill my water bottles from streams on the hills, no need to waste money on bottled water!

Of course this only works if there is water in the streams, in winter in Scotland most streams above 600m are frozen or buried in snow!
