Re: Difficult direct hike up Beinn Narnain and easy path dow

I'll check but I tended to take photos of views not paths from elevation. I use a GPS unit or phone. If you have a halfway okay smartphone you can download the GPX (plotted route) from Walkhighlands, or from any number of trip reports as many of them have the GPX route of their trek in them. That'll...

Re: Looking to buy a new 2 man tent

I can think of two videos on YouTube where they get damaged in high wind too, albeit Stripey's was just the plastic clip for holding the doors in place. Depends what you want them for, but they're not mountain tents. If that's the one I'm thinking about, it was a bad pitch; if you pitch sideways ex...

I guess it means by "well" and "wind", but plenty of high-wind camps on Youtube.

Re: Looking to buy a new 2 man tent

Light weight, pitch in one, side entrances... if you use trekking poles have you considered the Lanshan 2 or Lanshan 2 Pro?

Re: Garmin inReach Mini

I'm sure the McMurdo type would work else we'd be hearing horror stories about them; but the Garmins do a bit more. They all have texting, and the ones larger than the Mini have mapping too. But then the Garmin units costs more to buy and cost more to run. You pays your money you gets your toy.

Re: Difficult direct hike up Beinn Narnain and easy path dow

I love the direct-ascent of Narnain, it's a nice wee challenge and for most people a manageable one. And yes if you were wading through waist high heather you missed the path... but that's always very easy to do. Depending where you are you can triple your calories-per-hour but reduce your speed to ...

Re: Lanshan; a question.

Pour small amounts of of spirit into some decanted sealant and mix until you have the viscosity of olive oil.

You can also use mineral spirit instead of white spirit if you already have some.

Re: WHW wildcamping Milngavie

Just a wee note but the camping restrictions along Loch Lomond is March through September, so in October you don't have to worry about any of the restrictions on the trail.

Re: Downloading maps

I've never had an OS map fail to render on my Garmin unit, or an OSM map fail to render in OruxMaps on my phone.

The combination of your model of phone and app certainly not safe, perhaps consider changing hardware and/or software.

Re: Lanshan; a question.

Some of the larger Go Outdoors have a range of Eurohike, OEX and Vango tents up. As for Lanshan, you could do worse than consider a new one. This is the tent department of the Lanshan store on Aliexpress. https://www.aliexpress.com/store/group/Tent/911827435_10000001021924.html It comes with s...

Re: Garmin inReach Mini

As far as I can tell from the Garmin site; the tracking pings are not the biggest battery drain. The default tracking ping is 10 minutes, that gives 90 hours of use. BUT if you turn on Extended Tracking (which turns off Bluetooth, Message Listening, Navigation, Track Logging) the battery life goes u...

Re: Best alternative to Viewranger?

If you want to use OS Maps, then OS Maps is the way forward.

If you can live with OSM, then Oruxmaps is the one I use. You can put TalkyToaster maps on it and you can put "skins" that make OSM maps look like OS maps.
