Re: Cairngorms Snow

I was up Derry Cairngorm yesterday and across to Loch Etchacan and there were only some minor patches of soft snow that were avoidable. Looking east to Beinn a'Bhuird, there did not appear to be any snow on the west side/top.

Re: Sunset view

Some suggestions: Craigowl Hill just north of Dundee, which is not very high; Law Hill, Dundee; Dundee multis before they are demolished; On top of Tayside House, Dundee or from a window high up before it is demolished, if you can sneak past the security guards or know an employee to sneak you in; L...

Re: Charged by a red deer

I accidentally disturbed a nest of grouse coming down off Beinn Iutharn Mhor on Saturday and the grouse chased me and made a sort of devilish, hissing growl ! It then feigned injury to try and lead me away from its nest of chicks/cheepers. Felt very guilty as the cheepers scattered in all directions...

Re: CMD Arete Exposure

I found the CMD arete fairly straightforward and there are sections of path if you want to avoid certain bits.

Re: Royal Wedding alert - Head for the hills!

I think the stats are that there have been 1,000's of applications to local councils in England for street parties to celebrate the wedding but there have only been 3 applications in Scotland. Looks like the Scottish hills will be busy with folk avoiding the wedding, me included. Long weekend at Avi...

Re: overseas adventures

I was in the Dolomites last year and stayed in Corvara and had a great time in an amazing place. Plenty of high and low level walks with some cracking mountains to bag like Marmolada, Sella or Sassonger. Also lots of graded Via Ferrata, which is great fun and is like scrambling or rock climbing but ...

Re: Are dogs allowed up to Meall Glas and Sgiath Chuil

Cheers folks, appreciate the advice, particularly the risk of abortion by frightened sheep.

It's actually a friend's dog and although he is well trained I still think there is a subdued killer instinct.

Are dogs allowed up to Meall Glas and Sgiath Chuil

There used to be a sign saying "No Dogs" on the route up to Meall Glas and Sgiath Chuil from Glen Dochart near Killin. Appreciate the 'right to roam' laws but does anyone know if dogs are barred from this route?

Cheers.

Re: Loch Callater

I was at Loch Callater on Saturday (19/3) and there was quite a bit of snow, probably about 12" deep on the walk into the Loch although the land-rover track in was well compacted. The hills surrounding the Loch were covered in snow so I aborted attempts to climb any higher, walked out and went ...

Re: Need advice for Loch Tay Region

The Tarmachan Ridge is a great walk and starts high making it a reasonably easy one. Ben Lawers, An Stuc and Meall Garbh, starting from Machuim and heading up towards Lochan nan Cat instead of from the Visitors Centre, is a great walk as well. There was snow and ice on the top of Ben More last week ...

Re: To pole or not to pole - that is...................

I use poles now due to a knee operation and they help a great deal going up (when it is like using a handrail) and going down (when it helps with the jarring). However, I would suggest not using poles until you really need them, say if your knees start to really hurt. If you climb without poles, you...
