Re: Winter Winds on the Flanks of the Cairngorms

Great photos of what sounds an enjoyable walk. I used to organise cottages and the like for winter walking with some friends but that only lasted six years and then turned into summer trips but only for a few more years. Could continue in theory I suppose.

Re: The Saddle

Some dramatic photos there. Been down Forcan ridge on a windy summer's day which I thought was tricky enough so I can imagine it wouldn't be very easy in winter. I seem to recall having to use friction a lot but obviously different tactics needed if there's snow and ice.

Re: Geal Charn from Spey Dam

That does look a good alternative and would have caught the early light nicely. There was a lot of pre-dawn fog in the glen so I suspect I missed out there but I would have been wary of the burn crossing. Don't tell me, it was just a an easy to step over narrow burn. Good views of the crags there to...

Re: Geal Charn

It was a cracking day to be up there, the views were fantastic, I'm pretty sure I saw your footprints in the snow at Uinneag Coire an Lochain Yes, could well have been my footprints as I didn't see any others following the corrie edge. I did see a route similar to yours in another WH report. That m...

Re: Geal Charn

A good choice of walk for winter, as it stands singly Some great photos there. "Plenty to admire in the distance' could be Antarctica! I just pick easy walks for this time of year and to protect my ankle but I see what you mean -location-wise it is almost bound to be a good viewpoint for the s...

Ah yes, going for a walk! http...

Re: A Fantastic Fannichs Five

Great stuff. Sgurr nan Clach Geala was looking mighty fine from where I was. Wouldn't have fancied that wind later on though.

Superb morning photos, especially with how rough sounding you felt.

Re: Helvellyn

One of the finer winter walks in the lakes is the round of helvellyn either the short route of striding edge and squirrel edge 😻. Or extended if time. Then back for a pint near patterdale. Bit tricky if mounds of soft snow like a cornice trying get onto summit plateau off striding edge but such a w...

Re: Eididh nan Clach Geala

I was on the Fannichs that very day. We could have waved to each other (maybe being able to make out a microscopic dot in the snowscape!). the day did indeed start to reveal itself. Good visibility, thankfully, but the wind did get up very strongly. On my last ridge I was standing sideways. Also, t...

Re: Eididh nan Clach Geala

Stunning photos of some of Scotland's finest mountains. A great read too! - I especially liked "The day is starting to reveal itself, like a painting that develops and only finds its final form towards the end." I've often vaguely thought that about a hill day, especially in winter - but ...

Re: Eididh nan Clach Geala

Ohhh what a wonderful day you had. Love seeing pictures of the snow covered hills up north. Glad I am not the only one who manages to miss paths  Yes, I probably need to leave a trail of crumbs or something. My excuse is that I was probably admiring the waterfalls in the other direction too mu...

Re: Eididh nan Clach Geala

That looked like a really good day. I was halfway through reading your report before I realised I'd actually climbed this hill myself - it took me till the first waterfall photo before it got a bit familiar  I was planning to click on the hill title to see where it was as I thought I had never...

Re: A Walk of Three Thirds

Easter Balloch looks quite remote on the map. I can imagine it being quite atmospheric with the cloud down and you've got a great photo there later on of the snow covered track beneath a clearing sky.

Re: Over the Sea to Raasay

Excellent photos and descriptions.
I remember Sorley MacLean from his cameos on the Munro Show, maybe not what he should be remembered for which I see is more to do with the poetry and use of Gaelic language.
