Re: A fine line between pleasure and pain…

Great report....but I LOVE that photo with the the hill and clouds making it look like an active volcano!
Looking at the map, I'm thinking the hill is Sgorr Dhearg? Such a great photo

Re: Ice Axe size for Winter Walking

I would like to thank those who genuinely responded with advice and tips on ice axes. It's very much appriecated. They were exactly what I was looking for. However, there are those minor few who felt the need to respond to my post not about the ice axes but crictise my shopping technique instead. Wh...

Re: Ice Axe size for Winter Walking

One thing that didn't get mentioned is weight. Some people prefer a nice sturdy weight to the axe, for my money light is good. That's why I sent Petzl, they do relatively light axes but very well regarded in terms of durability. Currently Amazon UK have the Glacier model (straight shaft) 60cm (350g...

Re: Ice Axe size for Winter Walking

I don't fancy a 'forum argument' but going into shops trying things then going online to find it cheaper is bad form in my opinion. You are completely right. I should be buying from the shops that I’m going into. Being an multi-millionaire, I can easily afford to buy things at the prices the shops ...

Re: Ice Axe size for Winter Walking

The usual advice is that when holding it in your hand by your side, the tip should be around ankle height. I'm 6' and found the 68 cm Petzl Glacier to be right for me. Bear in mind for the hip-to-ankle guide some people prefer much longer, some people prefer substantially shorter. I think part of t...

Re: Ben A'an

Cracking Views at the top and a nice simple walk for a family to do.
Car parking was a nightmare, but it was on a Sunday when I did it, the hill was overrun with folks & families.
Shame about some of the trees being hacked away though, kinda ruins part of the walk up.
