Re: The Strathfarrar Four: how NOT to compleat :)
You're so lucky having these as your local hills. I'm not surprised you cracked and did them early. I'm trying to save Sgurr na Ciche for my compleation, as it's the best one I have left, but it's always possible I will crack and do it earlier. Having just done another 7 Munros last week and only ma...

Re: Lunndaidh, Bloody Lunndaidh
Useful report as I'm planning a trip up Glen Ey for next week. So you reckon the best camping spot is beyond the ruined lodge?

Re: Buffeted on Bhrotain and a lesson learnt.
Thanks for the condition update. I was thinking of heading up by this route in a few weeks' time. Sounds like it's one for the boots and gaiters rather than the running shoes. Always worth having a backup for navigation. I had a compass point South once. Good job I was in a party doing winter hillwa...

Re: 7 Lawers, 1 day
Good, honest report. Well done to keep going.
When I was a bit younger I did the round of 6 (minus Meall Greigh) from the North, running the downhill bits. Made an early start, back to the car by 2 and home to London before midnight. Don't think I'd manage that nowadays!

Re: Mamores ridge: mixed fortunes & avoided an epic
Interesting contrast to when I was up there the summer before last and camped in Coire an Lochain.
Sounds like you made the right decision to bail out. The Mamores are always worth another visit.

Re: sugar tax - what's your go to drink?
Classic Coca Cola or Red Bull (preferably a flavoured one when they can be found on special offer) for 1 day trips - for the caffeine as much as the sugar. Hi Five tablets added to the water bottle for wild camping trips. Ribena Carton as a backup. For an extra sugar hit, I'd recommend snack size Ma...

Re: iPad Mini
I'd agree with the above comments. I have an iPad mini, but mostly use it as a Kindle on the train. It doesn't have a SIM, so I haven't tried using it for navigation, as using the phone as a hotspot for it would really eat battery. Battery life is better than my old iPhone 6S, but I'd go for an extr...

Re: Advice on good Munro for wild Camping
Ben Starav is good and has fine views. I didn't camp at the top, as I ran out of time before it got dark, but I noted some flattish grassy ground just below the summit which would have been ideal. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=23276

Re: What's your oldest piece of kit?
I still use an old and much-faded sleeping bag I had on camping holidays with my parents in the late 60s/early 70s. I like it because it has a rubbish artificial filling, so I don't overheat when summer camping from the car. I even keep it in the old bag my mother sewed for it, despite now being ful...

Re: Night navigation practice
Interesting exercise and a good way to do those hills.
If you had the GPS switched off, how come you've got a GPX map at the end? Were you recording the route with the GPS but not looking at it? That would be a good way to review how you'd done afterwards.

Re: The Cold Hole – Fuar Tholl
Looks like you had a great couple of days there. Coire Lair is one of my favourite places too, but I've yet to do FT as I've been concentrating too much on the Munros. Last time I was up there in winter we had to abandon the trip, as my friend was suffering from the after effects of the Chicken Curr...

Re: Phone and OS app for maps
You can try before you buy by downloading the free app and entering the codes you get with the current OS paper maps on the website to download the digital versions. The advantage of the subscription is you get the whole country in 50:000 & 25:000 and can zoom between the two, which is nice. The...

Re: 4 greybeards in August
any thoughts on Skye + Raasay? Skye was suggested earlier and i liked the sound of it but heard it's getting overly popular in the summer months. maybe a skip over to Raasay might dodge the crowds? i realize it's a fairly wee isle but i've done a bit of research and it looks promising for light and...

Re: Strategy For Using WalkHighlands GPX files with OS Maps
I have a spare case with a (newer) second battery in it for my iPhone 6S, which more than doubles battery life. Seems to work fine with OS Maps for shorter day walks in England, but I wouldn't rely on it for a proper expedition into the Scottish hills, especially in cold weather. I always carry a pa...
