Re: Skye trail, why North to South?

If planning to end at the north and rely on public transport to get yourself to prearranged accommodation it is not quite so straightforward as getting the bus to the start in the north and ending back in Broadford. If those practicalities are not important then the only other reason I can think of ...

Re: Piles of Stones

I think this will be my final post on this topic. It has been interesting to read everyone's comments and views. Thank you. Back in the 1970's long before the Land Reform Act and other legislation established rights of access to open land (and no doubt before many readers of this were born) I walked...

Re: Piles of Stones

Okay, so let's have a look at it from this perspective: When I walk out my front door and on to the street or into the wilds I am on land that belongs to me and everyone else" Sunset Tripper One aspect of ownership is the right to do with it as one pleases. If that is the case with something in...

Re: Piles of Stones

It's been interesting to read folks views on this. Now to answer this question. Allright, I have to ask, because I've got nothing better to do, what is it that people find annoying about them? Because if you can't express it in a rational manner then it just sounds like an attack of the grumps to me...

Re: Am I being unreasonable here...?

Vertigo in my experience can be a bit of an odd thing. I've walked the Crib Goch ridge with my hands in my pockets and crossed Tower Gap on the Ben without rope. However once I walked out on a broken down dam wall in Wales, it was about 6-8ft wide and at the end maybe only 20ft high. Walking out was...

Re: Advice needed on boots refund/credit note

It would appear from what you have described that having had two sets of boots and both exhibited the same fault the problem is something to do with how the boots are made. In which case they are not of merchantable quality. If they are advertised as waterproof boots then one would expect them to be...

Piles of Stones

There seems to be a proliferation of small piles of stones at many popular locations where tourists take a short stroll from the car park to some attractive viewpoint. I can remember my first visit to Neist Point on Skye, the shore was a wild rocky place with an air of remoteness. Today it is covere...

Re: Knoydart wild camp

To my mind it is not unreasonable for an estate to wish to restrict camping to a specific area if the area becomes popular and people camp relatively close to a house and especially one that is remotely set. If this is the case the land owner has the right under the access code to approach the local...

Re: Tent Trouble

I'm no expert but my thoughts are that seam sealing is a post manufacture process so the chemical bonding between the sealant and the fabric is not going to be as good as that between the tent cloth and its waterproofing laminate/impregnation. Ultra violet light will over time break down the sealant...

According to my map that grid ref is a boggy bit of ground south of Luib. Is it right?

Re: Public Transport Questions - How to get to Skye

There is a blablacar.co.uk website also have a look at carclub.easycar.com.

You might be lucky on blablacar but I don't think easycar will be cheaper overall than bus.

Re: Which waterproof boots do I buy

When it comes to footwear the only thing that matters is comfort and fit. My criteria after that are Vibram sole and some sort of waterproof lining, who makes them is largely irrelevant as long as they look well made. Just because someone recommends a particular boot doesn't make it right for you, t...

Re: Coral on Swirl How?

Never been there, but I have found fossilised shells of bivalve moluscs embedded in the rock high up near the summit of Dun Caan, the highest hill on Raasay. Which must be a bit embarrassing for the Wee Free Kirk minister, given the Kirk's hard line stance on Creationism Versus Evolution. Of course...
