Re: walking pole tents

Clever idea, but what do you do if you've set up your wild camp and then want to go up the hill with your pole(s)? Probably best for an ultralight bivvy shelter. The kind of walkers that appreciate the low weight of these shelters don't tend to operate out of a basecamp, preferring to maximise the ...

Re: Bed&Breakfast Glasgow-Edinburgh

Click on 'Accommodation' at the top of the page and you'll be presented with a good selection ranging from campsites to hotels. Best of all, if you mention Walkhighlands you help to support the site! Hurrah! :D

Even easier - see Glasgow rooms and Edinburgh rooms.

Re: Winter mountaineering course

A further vote for Glenmore Lodge - I've just completed my Mountain Leader course there and can't recommend it highly enough. Slightly more expensive than hiring a private MIC/Guide, but the included accomodation, food, transport and top-notch free gear hire make it very competitive. They've got at ...

Re: walking pole tents

I use "walking pole supported tents" for almost all my overnight trips in Scotland (one night a week on average) - as you say, why carry a set of dedicated poles? Check out the Golite Shangri-La series, Mountain Laurel Designs (Trailstar and DuoMid) and GramCounter Gear. You should find pl...

Re: Social Hiking integration

Looks like you need to make a point of zooming out when using OS maps (unless it's just because there's only 1 marker that makes it zoom right in) You've got it. It zooms into the geographical extent of the recorded beacons. Give it a go with a few more beacons over a wider area next time and see t...

Re: Social Hiking integration

I use Social Hiking a fair bit - see a map of the DeafBlind Ben Nevis climb here - and can offer a limited amount of technical support on behalf of Walk Highlands for this new functionality. However, the support pages on Social Hiking are pretty detailed and should answer most questions.

Reporting Posts

Despite some robust protection, this forum occasionally attracts the attention of naughty people/robots, and the admins/moderators have to keep a close eye on things to prevent the boards filling up with fake handbag adverts and video conversion tutorials. Much as Paul may appear to spend his whole ...

Re: Isle of Arran / Beinn Tarsuinn this weekend

It's a great route, you'll love it.

I can recommend a wild camp in Glen Rosa, either at the established camp site or further up the glen.

I'll be on Arran from Friday afternoon and filming with BBC Alba in the middle of a bog somewhere near Shiskine on Saturday/Sunday. Say hello if you see me!

Re: Snow blades (<90cm) - anyone know where I can get them?

Do they have to be Snowblades (which I understand to be a Salomon-specific model) or would any ski-boards do? If so, there is a huge range at http://www.skiboardsonline.com/ (US-based) and a few here and here . Probably best not to mention them on general ski/snowboard forums though

Re: Smart phone (android) usefull apps

On the other hand, my Motorola Defy with an updated version of Android has a tendency to overheat when running processor-heavy applications and stowed close to my body - this can be annoying when recording a GPS track and you don't notice...
