Re: Icy Mountains

Yes, but considering there seems to be an increase in the number of people going into the hills without the knowledge, skills or kit, it makes sense to flag up these conditions specifically for those people. It doesn't seem to be PC these days to say if you haven't got the skills and kit don't go up...

Re: Locked gates at Glen Fannich

You can email the relevant access officer with problems assocated with access. https://www.highland.gov.uk/info/1225/countryside_farming_and_wildlife/161/outdoor_access/7 If these sorts of things were reported more often then the message will eventually get through to estates. If nothing is reported...

Re: Backpacking rucksack for tall guy (6'2")?

At only 5' 2" I can't offer suggestions from experience but I know the frustration with sizing from the other end of the spectrum. Aiguille do a range of back lengths, their long may well suit but they are expensive. https://www.aiguillealpine.co.uk/info/advice-2/rucksack-advice/rucksack-back-s...

Re: Hill name misinformation.

While this may be interesting historically, considering most use OS maps for navigation it would be logical that a guide to Walking in the Highlands would use the name appearing on those maps. Historically, I would imagine, it would not have been uncommon for different communities to have different ...

Re: Jura-Islay-Colonsay or Arran?

Now I briefed my wife, she started to talk about Isle of Mull as well, so just ordered some extra books and maps  A few years ago an old mate and I spent a week on Mull followed by a week on Islay in the first half of June and the weather was for the most part excellent. Although the ferries s...

Re: Skye Trail Recommendations?

The shop looked busy so went and took a closer look at the Cuillin before shopping.

It was a bit hazy today.

Re: Skye Trail Recommendations?

Today, (21st March) we have a near cloudless sky here on Skye. The top of the Storr is free from snow. The temperature has been a max of 12 to 13C so expecting a low temperature tonight, possibly down to a couple of degrees. I'm only 50m above sea level so definitely freezing on the tops overnight. ...

Re: Hiking through disused quarries on the edge of Snowdonia

Well that brought back some distant memories. Before the Dinorwig Power station was built and Llyn Peris was still a small attractive lake one could wander anywhere in the quarry with no wire fences to keep one to a specified route. Fences were put up around the construction site but one could bypas...

Re: Can I just walk through fields ?

You can find a good outline of what responsible access covers here https://www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot/practical-guide-all As regards walking across fields to avoid a road section it comes down to practicality. To follow the line of the road over the adjacent fields could involve extra distance ...

Re: Training ideas for Scotland bike-hike trip?

It's strange that we often think about getting fit for walking uphill but rarely for walking down which often takes more out of the legs than the up.

Re: Ventile

Back in the late 60s and early 70s I had a ventile anorack, single if I remember. It was robust, windproof and as I recall was surprisingly waterproof.

Re: How many kendal mint cakes in 1 day

It's been a long time since I ate Kendal Mint Cake on a hike but when I did I would save it for the times I felt I needed something extra. That would usually come in the afternoons when the effect of a good breakfast was wearing off and my lunch ( cheese and raisins ) was consuming some energy being...

Re: Gore-tex jackets and sustainability

It would be interesting to analyse what was the failure of the garments that necessitated replacement.
